In the Xi'an incident, there is one person who has to be mentioned, that is, Bai Fengxiang. At that time, he was the commander of the Sixth Division of the Cavalry Army stationed in Guyuan, Gansu, and was appointed by Zhang Xueliang as the commander-in-chief of Huaqingchi's capture of Jiang.

Bai Fengxiang

"Tonight I'm going out on an important mission, and if I don't come back, don't be upset, remember that I'm doing the right thing!" Before the mission, Bai Fengxiang said goodbye to his family.

After the Xi'an Incident, Bai Fengxiang was dismissed by Chiang Kai-shek. Under these circumstances, Bai Fengxiang did not care about personal gains and losses, resolutely destroyed his family to relieve the difficulty of forming a Rehe anti-Japanese advance army of more than 20,000 people, and went to the anti-Japanese battlefields of Suiyuan and Northeast China in Inner Mongolia, where he and Ma Zhanshan were armed at the Jungar Banner to eliminate the traitors, and with General Fu Zuoyi killed Japanese Lieutenant General Mizukawa Yifu in the fierce battle of Wuliang Suhai "Red Willow Lake" in the Battle of Wuyuan.

Unity Publishing House's newly published "Riding a Thousand Miles: The Life of Bai Fengxiang Rongma" is based on the true deeds of the famous anti-Japanese general Bai Fengxiang rongma in Rehe. The author, Qiu Xiangguo, sorted out the memoirs of a number of informed elderly people in his hometown, the manuscripts provided by the relatives of General Bai Fengxiang, and relevant historical documents, etc., and after more than ten years of collection and accumulation, he wrote a book.

The following is part of the book that records the Xi'an Incident, and truly reproduces Bai Fengxiang's righteous deeds.

On December 11, 1936, Chiang Kai-shek decided to suppress the Communists on a large scale and hold a military conference in Huaqingchi, and Zhang Xueliang again advised Chiang, and as General Yang Hucheng said, Chiang Kai-shek was obstinate and stubborn to the end, and Zhang Xueliang's hopes of persuasion and weeping were completely shattered. Therefore, he made up his mind to stop suppressing the Communists and unanimously resist the Japanese, and ordered Bai Fengxiang, Liu Guiwu, and Sun Mingjiu to bring their elite guards to Lintong Huaqingchi and detain Chiang Kai-shek in armed forces.

Bai Fengxiang received the order and returned home from the Zhang Mansion, suddenly feeling heavy in his heart and under great pressure, he carefully decided to reorganize the secret service company that had been transferred to Xi'an into a death squad, with Wang Guocai as the captain and Kou Baozhu as the deputy captain, and carry out special tasks together.

According to Bai Fengxiang's daughter Bai Yali, her father returned to his home in Xi'an Xuanfengqiao, ordered his adjutants, guards, and retinue not to leave, he personally inspected the guns, and after all the arrangements were in place, even though it was late at night, he also asked his husband to fry a few dishes, invited the whole family to drink together, woke his parents up from sleep, arranged them to go to the seat, and said to his family heavily: "Tonight I am going out to perform an important task, in case I don't come back, you should not be sad, remember that I am doing the right thing!" After saying that, he raised his glass and drank it with his family. At this time, only Bai Fengxiang's third wife, Feng Yuelian, guessed a few points, but when it came to military secrets, she did not dare to ask more. Bai Fengxiang has such a heavy responsibility on his body, and still does not forget to comfort his family.

After one o'clock in the morning of December 12, Bai Fengxiang, Liu Guiwu, Sun Mingjiu, Wang Yuzhan, Wang Guocai, Chang Guobin, Qiu Zhenhe and the guards led by him gathered together, and more than 100 people drove toward Lintong by car and motorcycle, and at 2:30 arrived at the camp of the guard battalion, that is, around Shilipu near Baqiao in the eastern suburbs of Xi'an.

At this time, Shang Yadong and Wang Xieyi assembled the whole guard battalion and were ready to go, and Commander Bai Fengxiang got out of the car and made a pre-war mobilization to the combatants, saying: "We are all northeasterners, why can't we go back to our hometown?" It was Chiang Kai-shek who ordered the young marshal to withdraw from the three eastern provinces and forced us to fight the Red Army. Deputy Commander Zhang today advised Chiang Kai-shek to stop the civil war and concentrate on resisting Japan, but he was also detained by Chiang Kai-shek; the task of our guard battalion is to protect the safety of the commander, and even if he dies tonight, he will rescue Deputy Commander Zhang from his old nest. Bai Fengxiang's words were so vivid that the officers and men were extremely angry when they heard them, and some of them even cried out, and he went on to say: "Tonight everyone listens to my command, turns grief into strength, eliminates Chiang Kai-shek's gendarmerie and guard regiment, invites Chiang Kai-shek to Xi'an alive, exchanges him for Deputy Commander Zhang, does not hurt him, and also has an explanation to the deputy commander." Everyone said in unison: "Obey the order, obey the command." After Bai Fengxiang issued the combat task, he got into command, and the guards battalion brigade rushed to Huaqingchi in two large cars.

At 4:00 a.m. on December 12, a regiment of the 105th Division, under the cooperation and command of brigade commander Tang Yaojun, surrounded the outside of Huaqingchi, and Liu Guiwu, under the command of Bai Fengxiang, led the guards to attack, he rushed into the gate of Huaqingchi with two guns in his hand, and the guard post shot back, and was killed by Liu Gui's five guards soldiers. At this time, Bai Fengxiang also rushed into the Gate of Dayue Cave, and he and Liu Guiwu were at the Gate of Dayue Cave, holding two guns on the left and one on the right, killing Chiang Kai-shek's guards one after another, and then commanding Sun Mingjiu to send some of the guards led by Wang Guocai to disarm the gendarmerie troops at the Yuwang Temple. Bai Fengxiang personally led the soldiers of the Guard Battalion to rush into the Erdaoyue Cave Gate, Liu Guiwu led the people to a frontal impact, and the fierce gunfire woke up Chiang Kai-shek's bodyguards, and they blocked the road from Feihong Bridge to the Five Halls with machine guns, and Liu Guiwu led the Guard Battalion to fail to rush in several times. Bai Fengxiang ordered Sun Mingjiu, Wang Yuzhan, Wang Guocai, and others to use the rockery as a cover to attack, and then transferred the machine gunners of the guard battalion to form a powerful fire offensive to eliminate the machine gun fire points of the guards. The captain of the exorcism team, Wang Guocai, took the opportunity to use the cover of the rockery to quickly approach the five halls, he first rushed into chiang kai-shek's bedroom in the five halls, and when he saw that Chiang Kai-shek was no longer there, his clothes were still hanging on the hangers, his briefcase and dentures were on the table, he touched the bed and there was still room for warmth, knowing that Chiang had not been away for a long time, and at this moment Bai Fengxiang and Liu Guiwu also rushed in with people, and as soon as Bai Fengxiang came in, the injured Qian Dajun knew Bai Fengxiang and hurriedly said: "Ruilin, what is going on?" One side stepped forward and shook Bai Fengxiang's hand. Bai Fengxiang did not care to explain, so he said, "We are here to protect the chairman of the committee, where is he now?" Qian Dajun said: "He was just in the house, and I don't know where he went." Bai, Liu, and Sun concluded that Jiang had not gone far, and might have hidden nearby, and immediately sent troops to search everywhere. It turned out that Chiang Kai-shek was sleeping, was awakened by the sound of gunfire, got up from bed, did not care to get dressed, ran outside, heard that there was a gun battle in the courtyard, it was difficult to hide, he fled to the east side of the five halls, under the close protection of his nephew Jiang Xiaoxian, hurriedly climbed over the wall, because it was dark and could not see the situation outside the wall, when he landed, he injured his spine, broke his foot, and rushed up the hill, and a shoe was lost on the road. Afterwards, Bai Fengxiang told his aide-de-camp Qiu Zhenhe: When we came to Huaqingchi, we were not very clear about the terrain outside Huaqingchi, and the young marshal took me to see Jiang beforehand to see most of the terrain inside the courtyard, did not inspect the terrain around the courtyard, did not carefully deploy the encirclement, and missed the place where Jiang fled, almost causing a big mistake, and the lesson was profound!

Bai Fengxiang: Commander-in-chief of the Xi'an Incident to capture Jiang

After "catching Jiang", the northwest culture daily newspaper reported at the time.

After a fierce gun battle between Chiang Kai-shek's guard regiment and the gendarmerie, the dead, wounded, and surrendered, the Chiang Kai-shek guards commanded by Bai Fengxiang did not wound a single soldier, and Huaqingchi was occupied. Liu Duoquan, who was commanding on the outskirts, heard that Chiang Kai-shek had run away and quickly reported to Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng in the new city. Zhang and Yang were taken aback when they heard this, and ordered an inspection of the garage to see if Chiang Kai-shek's car was missing; salvaging the fish pond to see if they would dive into the water, and searched it carefully. After seven o'clock, Bai Fengxiang found the injured Chiang Kai-shek attendant Qian Dajun and asked him where Chiang had gone, and Qian did not know. At this time, the soldiers came to report that a shoe had been found outside the east wall of HuaqingChi, and Bai Fengxiang concluded that it was Chiang Kai-shek's shoe, and ordered Liu Guiwu and Wang Guocai to lead the troops to start searching the mountain. When he found a place not far from Chiang Kai-shek's hiding place, one of the attendants who supported Chiang Kai-shek to escape showed his head to see the movements, and was shot dead by the soldiers who searched the mountain. After Wang Guocai heard the gunshots, he quickly ran up to stop them, shouting: We want to live chairman of the committee, and we are not allowed to shoot. Chiang Kai-shek heard the accent in a very shallow cave next to the tiger grouper in the west of Xiuling on the mountainside of Lishan Mountain, not the Red Army catching him, and heard the chairman of the committee who wanted to live, so Chiang Shouted "I am the chairman of the committee, I am here" while helping the rock out of the cave. Wang Guocai immediately stepped forward and said, "Chairman of the Committee, we are the Northeast Army, Deputy Commander Zhang asked us to protect you, please ask the chairman of the committee to follow us into the city!" At this time, Bai Fengxiang arrived, saw Chiang Kai-shek bent over, barefoot, wearing only a pajamas, and was so cold that he shivered, immediately took off his fox fur coat and personally draped it on Chiang Kai-shek, and said to Chiang Kai-shek: "Chairman of the COMMITTEE, let you be frightened, Fengxiang led his troops to take a step, I was ordered by Deputy Commander Zhang Xueliang, I specially invited you to go to Xi'an City to discuss important matters." Then he said to the soldiers, carrying the chairman down the hill. When Chiang Kai-shek saw that it was Bai Fengxiang, he understood everything in his heart, and glared at Bai Fengxiang fiercely, silently. Chiang Kai-shek was carried down the valley and escorted back to Xi'an by Bai Fengxiang, Tan Hai, Sun Mingjiu, and Chang Guobin.
