Huang Jiguang

(1931—1952)

Huang Jiguang, a native of Zhongjiang, Sichuan. He was the head of the children's regiment in the village and the first person in the village to sign up for the Chinese Volunteer Army. He was killed in the Battle of Shangganling on October 19, 1952. He was 21 years old. Later, he was posthumously awarded the title of "Special Combat Hero" and posthumously recognized as a member of the Communist Party of China. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea posthumously awarded him the title of "Hero of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea" and the Gold Star Medal and the National Flag Medal first class. In 2009, it was rated as "100 Chinese things that have touched since the founding of New China". In 2019, he was named "the most beautiful strivers in New China".

"Majestic and exuberant, across the Yalu River. To safeguard peace and defend the motherland is to protect the homeland..."

70 years ago, more than 1 million commanders and fighters of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army sang this song, crossed the Yalu River, resisted the United States and aided Korea, and defended their families and country. 197653 volunteers died heroically. Huang Jiguang, who died in the Battle of Shangganling, was one of these many heroes.

One

One day in 2015, in the Huang Jiguang Memorial Hall in Zhongjiang County, Deyang City, Sichuan Province, Huang Jiguang's former comrade-in-arms Li Jide held a bust sculpture of Huang Jiguang, and the old tears flowed. In the memory of this veteran soldier of the volunteer army, comrade-in-arms Huang Jiguang...

Huang Jiguang was not tall, black and thin, and his shoulders were not broad, but he looked very clever. He's 5 years older than me and likes to call me "Little Plum". When fighting, I can't eat well, and once I have something delicious, he always laughs and puts vegetables into my bowl: "Little plum, you are growing up, eat more." "Actually, he's not as tall as I am.

On the eve of the Battle of Shangganling, in order to boost morale, the troops arranged for the film team to go to the grass-roots companies to offer condolences and show everyone the Soviet movie "Ordinary Soldier" in the tunnel. This film tells the story of the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union, the Red Army soldier Matlosov, in order to win, blocked the bullets fired from the bunker by the enemy with his body and sacrificed heroically. After watching the movie, he asked me: "Little Plum, what do you think after watching the movie?" I said, "This warrior is so brave!" He said, "It's me, and I'm doing the same." Think about how many people can be saved by sacrificing one person! At this time, he grabbed my hand and said solemnly: "Little Plum, we have said well, if I am sacrificed in this war, you will write a letter to my house and come to my house to see; if you sacrifice, I will write to your home and come to your house to see." "So we made a life-and-death pact.

"My good comrade-in-arms, old brother, I've come to see you..." Li Jide murmured.

Looking at this scene, Huang Jiguang Memorial Hall's docent and Huang Jiguang's nephew Huang Yongjun also choked up, in his memory, the third father Huang Jiguang...

It was March 1951, and the third father went to the scene against the cold wind, saw the volunteer recruitment point of "resisting THE United States and aiding Korea and defending the country", and did not hesitate to sign up. Back home, the third father told his mother the news that he was going to the front line the next day, that is, my grandmother Deng Fangzhi. Grandma was silent for a long time and didn't say a word. That night, Grandma hurried out and borrowed a cotton coat from the neighbor and came back. Because there was only one cotton coat in the family that could not be torn anymore, Grandma was afraid that North Korea was too cold, so she prepared this cotton coat for her son. The next day, the third father set off for the front line, and the grandmother kept watching the back of her son wearing a cotton coat gradually disappear, but she did not think that this was the last back left for her by the third father.

Shangganling, in fact, is not a mountain, but a small village, located in the southern foothills of the Five Holy Mountains in the middle of the Korean Peninsula. On both sides of Shangganling, there are two small hills, the right is the 597.9 highland, the left is the 537.7 highland, the combined area of these two hills is only 3.7 square kilometers, but they are each other's horns, north of the Five Holy Mountains, is an important support point for the front of the Five Holy Mountains.

On October 14, 1952, the U.S. army launched a sudden attack on Shangganling in an attempt to capture the Five Holy Mountains, forcing the Volunteers to retreat in order to gain a favorable position at the negotiating table. The Battle of Shangganling, which shocked the world, began, and on the first day, the US military fired more than 300,000 shells and dropped more than 500 bombs into this area of only 3.7 square kilometers, with an average of 45 tons of shells and explosives poured on every square kilometer.

On the evening of the 19th, the six companies of Huang Jiguang's battalion were ordered to seize the 597.9 heights, fighting for two hours and losing most of them. Zhang Guangsheng, chief of staff of the battalion, came to support with the messenger Huang Jiguang and a platoon. After the Sixth Company captured another position, it was blocked by Position Zero. Position Zero has 3 U.S. fire points, and to attack the hill, you must first destroy these fire points. Zhang Guangsheng sent 3 batches of 9 fighters from the blasting team to carry out the blasting, but 9 demolitionists were sacrificed. It is nearly dawn on the 20th, if you can't quickly eliminate these 3 fire points and seize position Zero, you will miss the entire fighter. The six companies suffered heavy casualties, and only a few people were able to participate in the attack.

At the critical moment, Huang Jiguang stepped forward: "I'll go!" Then, Wu Sanyang and Xiao Dengliang, who were also from Sichuan, also signed up: "I will also go!" ”

Company Commander Wan Fulai immediately appointed Huang Jiguang as the leader of the sixth class, and Wu Sanyang and Xiao Dengliang were included in the sixth class. The sixth class is the sharp knife class of the sixth company, called the "sixth class of great merit". In this battle, the first of the six squads to fight the light. Wan Fulai dispatched personnel several times to reorganize the six shifts, stubbornly retaining the number of the six shifts.

Subsequently, Huang Jiguang, Wu Sanyang, and Xiao Dengliang, under the cover of machine gunners, began to advance towards the enemy's fire point. After they struggled to defeat two fire points, Wu Sanyang was unfortunately killed, and Xiao Dengliang was also seriously injured and could not advance. Huang Jiguang was at the front, close to the last point of firepower.

At that time, the U.S. military was flares and illuminated the night as brightly as during the day. At this time, Huang Jiguang's left arm had been injured, but he still used the smoke of the explosion to continue to crawl forward. After approaching the fire point, he threw out the last grenade with force, blowing the fire point in half, and the American machine gun suddenly stopped firing.

The Volunteer troops immediately launched a charge. Soon, however, the remaining machine guns in the American fire point sounded again, firing wildly at the volunteer troops. The attack of the troops was again blocked.

In the roar of the enemy's machine guns, in the bright light of the flares and explosions, the warriors saw that Huang Jiguang, who had climbed to the point of fire to shoot the dead end, moved - the not-strong figure jumped up suddenly, opened his arms, and pounced on the machine gun eye that was spraying the tongue of fire, with a not-so-wide chest, tightly blocked the firing hole...

The warriors grabbed the fighter that Huang Jiguang had exchanged for his life, rushed forward, and completely destroyed the last fire point, and position Zero was taken!

Comrades-in-arms saw that Huang Jiguang was lying on the firing hole, clutching the sack bag around him with both hands, and his chest and abdomen were pierced by bullets, leaving a large hole in the bowl mouth...

"Resolutely complete all the tasks entrusted to us by our superiors, strive to make meritorious contributions to become heroes, and strive to join the party." These are the words that Huang Jiguang wrote in the letter of determination before the war.

Three

10 days after Huang Jiguang's heroic sacrifice, Lu Muxiang, the successor of the sixth squad leader, once again performed a feat that shook the earth - after being injured in many places, he did not have the strength to throw the grenade, and the 23-year-old soldier threw himself and the stringed grenade into the enemy bunker... It was a battle, the sixth company once again fought out the blood, Zhang Guangsheng was sacrificed, and Wan Fulai was seriously injured... Yes, the heroes who fired grenades, blasters and enemies died together, sacrificed themselves to blow up bunkers, blocked gun holes, and left 38 names!

In April 1953, Xiao Dengliang, who had recovered from his wounds, returned to the battlefield of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. He died in 2007 in Zhongjiang, his hometown shared by Huang Jiguang. Before his death, he made more than 200 reports on Huang Jiguang's deeds, and told the tragic scene he witnessed until half a month before his death.

In 1962, Huang Jiguang's class was named "Huang Jiguang Class". In the following decades, the "Huang Jiguang Class" reserved a bed for Huang Jiguang, and every day comrades opened and made this bed.

"Huang Jiguang!" "To!" In the nightly routine roll call of the company where Huang Jiguang was located, when Huang Jiguang was clicked, the officers and men of the whole company expressed the existence of the hero with the most powerful answer. In 2008, Huang Jiguang's company carried the red flag of "Huang Jiguang's unit before his death" to participate in the Wenchuan earthquake rescue. In 2009, Huang Jiguang's company was awarded the honorary title of "Huang Jiguang Hero Company".

Huang Jiguang's spirit is like a monument that will never fall, inspiring the sons and daughters of China to continue to be fearless of life and death and move forward courageously.
