As a 2001 World Champion and 2004 All England Champion, Gong was one of the best players of the early 20th century. She led her players through a number of routine training sessions such as a back-and-roll net sprint, shuttle training between the front and backcourts, quick movement between corners and sidelines, and basic defense. Defensively, she stressed the importance of soft counter-attacks and the need to imitate the game for high-speed training.

When Gong Ruina explained a special training, he asked the athletes to run from one sideline to another, and said that it was best to maintain the rhythm, do not stop in the middle to wait for the next attack, run continuously, increase the speed of start-up and reduce the slowness of secondary start-up.

She explains: "Sports are fast these days, so you have to be ready for that rhythm. In a real game, you don't have time to stay in it; the movement has to be continuous.
