From unemployment to career

If the painter uses brushes and paints to paint the picture in his heart, the voice actor uses his voice to express his emotions and express his ideals, and this expression is the most intense and docile. It is said to be intense because in the film, all the details of daily life: an action, an emotion, may be exaggerated as a storm and vented through the form of language; it is said to be docile because no matter how much the film is moving and how the characters in the film shout - the end of the play lights flash, everything is the same. Perhaps this feeling of "dreaming outside the dream" is exactly to Joe Hazel's taste, and the characteristics of the dubbing work of "only hearing his voice, not seeing his people" also coincide with his personality as an actor and does not like to express himself in front of people. In short, the original "secondment" actually achieved Qiao Hazel's lifelong career.

After being officially transferred to the Translation Factory, Qiao Hao became the backbone of the factory with his high understanding and solid line skills. At the end of the Cultural Revolution, a number of excellent foreign films with different styles entered China, providing a stage for the voice actors of the Shanghai Translation Factory to display their talents, and Qiao Hazel's voice also became popular with excellent translated films such as "Yesenia", "The Girl in White", "Life and Death Love", and "Tess". At that time, the "Three Musketeers" were widely rumored in the Translation Factory, that is, the three male actors known for their high dubbing level, Qiao Haorong was listed among them, and the other two were highly respected voice actors of the older generation: Qiu Yuefeng and Bi Ke. In addition to interpreting the role with his own voice, Qiao Hazel also tried to act as a translation director and achieved good results. The films "The Hunt", "Spartacus", "International Girl", "Piano Lessons", "Outlaws" and other films directed and translated by him have become classics of translation and production.

In 1984, Qiao Hao became the director of shanghai film translation and production factory for the first time, in addition to dubbing work, he also undertook complicated administrative affairs. As a self-financing enterprise, the translation factory has more than 60 employees and more than 70 retired employees; the translation of a foreign film requires multiple meticulous processes: modifying the script, translating lines, lip-syncing, recording, editing, synthesizing, some old films have incomplete sound materials, and they also need to temporarily produce sound effects and use professional foley artists. The wages and benefits of employees, and the various manpower and material resources used in the translation process are by no means a small amount. According to Qiao Hazel himself, last year was the year in which the Shanghai Translation Factory had the most films in its history: a total of 35 films, of which 5 or 6 were imported by China Film, but the factory still lost more than 1.7 million yuan, and finally relied on the subsidies of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture and Broadcasting to basically fill the deficit. The reason is mainly the problem of the system: the recently released American blockbuster "Gladiator", the box office easily jumped 4 million in the 10 days of release, but the actor who served as a translator for the film is still the standard of 10 years ago: the director is 60 yuan (10 minutes), and the actor is 40 yuan. In this way, even with a two-and-a-half-hour-long "blockbuster" like "Gladiator", the main actor only gets six or seven hundred yuan.

In order to reverse this passive situation in the translation factory, Qiao Hao and other colleagues in the factory who love the translation and production business have taken great pains to make some attempts, such as: publishing audio and video books for film dialogue and poetry recitation, shooting special television films, and holding large-scale recitations. Among them, the 1993 chant drama called "The Sum of Heaven" has the strongest response, which uses multimedia means such as music, drama, recitation and sound and light, with Qiao Hazel and Ding Jianhua as the main actors, which can be said to have opened the precedent of the domestic "chant drama" art form, but it is still "applauded but not popular", and has not achieved the purpose of "generating income". However, Qiao Hao and Ding Jianhua have been out of control since then, and even included the original "side business" of "recitation" into their career categories, which is probably the reason why the two of them are so devoted to the "Tang and Song Famous Music Recital". "Dubbing and recitation are both language arts, and there is no contradiction. I love recitation, and I love dubbing even more. Qiao Hazel said.

It is reported that Qiao Hazel and Ding Jianhua have recently been planning a large-scale poetry drama, written by the famous poet Nishikawa himself; at the end of this year, the two will once again join the Beijing Concert Hall to launch another large-scale recitation art concert after the "Tang and Song Dynasty Famous Music Recital",--the Chinese and Foreign Literary Works Capture Concert;and a "School Bag Project" led by the Shanghai Translation Factory, that is, the plan to make primary and secondary school Chinese textbooks into audio teaching materials with recitation is also in full swing; as for Qiao Hazel's "favorite" - dubbing: following "Gladiator" After that, he will once again voice the main characters in another blockbuster film released at the end of the year, "Perfect Storm", in addition, the translation and production of films such as "Mission Impossible 2" and "Super Mama" that he is the director of translation and directing is also in preparation.

From helplessness to no regrets

In interviews, I, as a fan of films that often watch original (but pirated) films in foreign languages, disputed the current state of translated films. I said that today's films are more and more pursuing the perfect combination of sound and painting, any subtle sound effects as an integral part of a complete film will be very important, and many of the translations I see have weakened or simply eliminated the delicate sound effects and even the musical part of the original film because of the Chinese mixing.

As the director of the only professional translation factory in China and an experienced dubbing artist, Qiao Hazel was very calm in the face of my "righteous indignation", "I have encountered the situations you said, most of which are because the original film copy is older and the sound effect is distorted. The 'blockbusters' we are introducing now have materials (pure sound effects), dubbing and sound effects are divided into tracks, and there will be no problem. Moreover, the films provided by the translation factory rarely appear in that situation. Qiao Hao seemed very confident when he said this, but I noticed that his brow was slightly locked. He looked up at me, as if he wanted to stop talking, and still opened his mouth after a moment of deep introspection: "Speaking of faithful originals, I don't dare to bet 100% of the votes." I was busy posing with an extremely curious look (really curious) after Mr. Qiao's shallow taste of the conversation style, and he continued to say: "Due to the different national conditions of various countries, many foreign films cannot be directly translated, and must be deleted, processed, and even adapted. He then gave me a very typical example of "adapting" the plot of a foreign movie before translation: there is a Japanese movie called "The Right to Love", which is about a woman who learned that she was suffering from AIDS, she loved her boyfriend deeply, and longed for his love, so she had a relationship with him without telling the other party of her illness, so that the other party almost got sick. The review department believes that the plot of this film is inconsistent with China's national conditions and suggests that it be deleted, and the task of deletion and correction naturally falls to the Shanghai Translation Factory. Finally, after some complicated discussion and difficult technical operation, the translation studio finally completed the task smoothly and successfully, and the adapted film made all parties satisfied, and it was simple to say: it was to move the night when the two had a relationship from the woman to the previous one after she learned of her illness. It is conceivable that the original film's intention to explore the complex aspects of human nature has also dissipated, and it has become another "Blood Doubt"-style sad love film. The revised film is still intact, and as usual, it earned tears from the audience during the screening, which undoubtedly proves the translation ability of the Shanghai Translation Factory, but also brings a lot of regret and helplessness to the translation staff, including Qiao Hazel.

I heard that the Translation Factory has recently "moved": it has moved from the old site to the Broadcasting Building, and is equipped with the most advanced translation equipment to make a hardware "big change". I asked Qiao Hazel, "hardware" changed, "software" will also be updated? With his brow slightly stretched, he said slowly: "We have been looking for a successor, and the current dubbing work has higher and higher requirements for the understanding and spirituality of the actors, which is not something that can be achieved by simple voice and performance training, but requires the actor's comprehensive understanding and expression ability of art and life, so we recruit people very cautiously." I said, "Today's young people are very pragmatic, how attractive is working in a translation factory for them?" "Translation factories don't make much money, but there are still many young people who are eager to work here, mainly because of interest." I think that if a person is engaged in a job that he loves, he can overcome even the greatest difficulties - because he has no regrets about his choices. This last sentence, Qiao Hazel said very lightly, as if he had specifically spoken it to himself.

From life to life

In life, Joe Hazel's personality is somewhat similar to his name: a hard shell is wrapped under a heart full of flavor. It is not easy to knock this shell open and enter his inner world.

The solemnity and conservatism that Qiao Hazel inadvertently exudes in life are equally natural to his generous and easy-going attitude and the demeanor he shows on the stage. People who do not know Qiao Hazel can hardly guess that this handsome and personable middle-aged man in front of him has endured the test of life and death twice. The first time was in 1986, when he was diagnosed with cancer, and due to the timely discovery, he himself actively cooperated with the treatment, and the condition was effectively controlled. According to Ding Jianhua's recollection, she felt very uneasy when she heard the news, because she could not guarantee that Qiao Hao would have enough courage to face the sudden illness. But the result was greatly unexpected by her, Qiao Hazel not only survived himself, but also kept comforting the people around him not to worry, which fully showed the tough and optimistic side of his personality; last year, the busy and tense work pressure knocked Qiao Hazel down again, with the experience of the previous illness, he strengthened the adjustment of body and mind this time, and strived to cooperate with the treatment with the healthiest mentality, achieving good results. Today, he is still heroic on the stage, and he looks very good offstage.

At the "Chinese Tang and Song Famous Music Recital" that just performed ten times on National Day, Qiao Hazel not only cooperated with Ding Jianhua on "Long Hate Song", but also had a "Qing Song" (a cappella) "Shu Dao Difficulty". Careful audiences will find that the performance repertoire of the "Famous Tang and Song Dynasties" is more "sad songs", and the scene of "sharing towels on and off stage" often appears, and the male actors who are "tears wet green shirts" on the stage are not in the minority, and Qiao Hao should be in the minority. When reciting "Long Hate Song", Ding Jianhua around him had already cried into a tearful person, but Teacher Qiao was still standing in danger, and there was little strong expression change on the plain and slightly blessed face: a hanging eyebrow, a pair of phoenix eyes, revealing a bit of Peking Opera Martial Arts handsomeness; the jaw was slightly raised, the corners of the mouth were lightly sipped, and the full emotions made people feel controlled.

It seems that Qiao Hazel's personality has not changed much because of his two illness experiences, and he is still so calm and introverted, which is the so-called "difficult nature". For this kind of personality, his "golden partner" Ding Jianhua in the translation room and on the stage has a lot of feelings, she said: "It feels like there seems to be an inexplicable barrier between Qiao Hao and life now. For example, during his school years, he was a sportsman, with ball games, athletics, and the title of national second-level athlete. But now, if you ask him about sports, he doesn't know as much as I do, and it can be described as lonely. For the "criticism" of his partner, Qiao Hazel seems to have acquiesced.

When listening to Ding Jianhua tell these stories, I shifted my gaze to Qiao Hazel on the side several times, when he had an innocent smile on the corner of his mouth and a glint of excitement in his eyes, which was the same as I remembered him. I think that when the lights in the studio dimmed, Qiao Hazel should be like this.
