In mid-July 2009, Mr. Ji Xianlin, a well-known Literary Scholar in China, died of illness in Beijing at the age of 98. As soon as the news came out, the relevant staff of Peking University, who had been taught by Mr. Lao in the past years, set up a spiritual hall to receive visitors from all over the world to mourn here.
Eight days later, the body of the old man was transported to the auditorium of the Revolutionary Cemetery in Babaoshan for temporary release.
Central leaders and people from all walks of life made a final farewell to the old gentleman wearing the party flag and lying surrounded by flowers and cypresses in a burst of mourning, and the relatives of the old man silently shook hands at the side to show their gratitude.

Looking at his life, Ji Xianlin's literary achievements can be described as very great, especially in the language of Buddhist texts, and he is a well-known master of "Oriental Studies" at home and abroad.
But no one expected that the old man's funeral had just come to an end, and a rumor about him and his son Ji Cheng had once again returned to the world's attention, gradually evolving into a noisy news.

01, thirteen years of separation between father and son: they should have been closest to each other, but they did not see each other within easy reach

Ji Cheng was born in Jinan in 1935 to his mother, Ji Xianlin's original wife, Peng Dehua. Peng Dehua is 4 years older than Ji Xianlin, has only attended primary school, and has paid a lot to Ji Xianlin and his family, and ji Xianlin, who is grateful to his wife, is willing to maintain the peace of this arranged marriage and family surface.
But the undercurrent has always existed and deeply affected Ji Cheng. In his childhood, Ji Cheng had never seen his father, and he was naturally alienated and strange to his father.
When he was 11 years old, he accidentally learned that his father, who had studied in Germany for ten years, was about to return to China, and he was slightly unprepared. Because he didn't know what to do with the man he had only seen in the pictures and heard of in his mother's mouth.
Ji Xianlin returned as scheduled and brought back the same gift to his children: a fountain pen that was a rare object at that time. Subsequently, without waiting for Ji Cheng to become familiar with his father, Ji Xianlin bid farewell to his relatives and rushed to Beijing to teach.
In 1952, Ji Cheng was admitted to the Russian Language Training School in Beijing, and the opportunity to meet Ji Xianlin increased. As Ji Cheng himself said, meeting more does not mean that you will become close, "getting acquainted with your father is indeed an incomparably long process."
10 years later, Ji Cheng's grandmother and mother moved to Beijing together, and the whole family had a rare and pleasant time. But the good times did not last long, the "special period" came, Ji Xianlin was imprisoned, Ji Cheng temporarily cut off contact with his father, and the father-son relationship returned to estrangement.
1995 was a crucial turning point for the duo. Peng Dehua was seriously ill and hospitalized, and Ji Cheng and Ji Xianlin had a verbal conflict and both said some harsh words.
After that, Peng Dehua died of illness, and the father-son relationship between Ji Xianlin and Ji Cheng continued to deteriorate, falling into a long stalemate and refusing to see each other within reach.
In this regard, Ji Cheng said that it was not as exaggerated as the media reports, and it was not they who prevented him and his father from meeting each other, but "some people". He cleared up the suspicions of Peking University, and then pointed the spearhead at "certain people" who were related to Peking University, and always refused to reveal the true reason.
Some people also say that it was Ji Xianlin himself who refused to see his son Ji Cheng. In a 2003 letter to Wu Xinying, he said: "Ji Chenglai 301 Hospital has ulterior motives... Anyway, I resolutely don't see him, I can't see anyone's right, there is always a bar. ”
The 13-year estrangement between father and son is right and wrong, and no one can say it clearly except the parties. But it is undeniable that in the 13 years that Ji Xianlin and his son were "separated", Peking University did take good care of the old man, so that the old man could enjoy a peaceful old age.
02, the old man in the eyes of others: the medical staff who have taken care of "Grandpa" miss him very much
From 1995 to 2002, Ji Xianlin lived in The Langrun Garden of Peking University as usual. Since 2002, he has been admitted to the 301 Hospital due to illness.
Ji Cheng said: "When my father lived in Langrun Garden, I often went around the garden to greet my father's assistant and actively avoid my father. Every holiday, I would send a large number of Shandong jai dishes to my father's secretary's house, and Li Xiaojun, the son of secretary Li Zheng, usually only kept part of it, and the rest was given to my father. My father knew this, but he never said it. ”
When Ji Xianlin was admitted to the hospital, the situation began to change. Ji admitted that some people wanted to "occupy" and "monopolize" the national treasure masters, so they deliberately prevented fathers and sons from meeting each other.
But the doctors and nurses who have been taking care of Ji Xianlin in 301 Hospital said that Ji Xianlin's later life was particularly quiet, and everyone had troubles, they all wanted to sit in front of his bed, nag him a few words, and then listen to the old man not slow down and comfort a few words, unhappy will immediately disappear.
Ji Xianlin's attending doctor recalled that ji Xianlin's daily performance was very quiet, he did not like exercise, and only followed the attending doctor to do a health exercise every day when the attending doctor rounded the room, turning left and right, lifting the leg and kicking and kicking.
If someone else had asked for such a request, it would have been impossible to move him. It is precisely because of the rare exercise in his later years, coupled with the torture of illness, that In the last few years, Ji Xianlin not only lost his body, but also had a certain degree of atrophy and joint stiffness in his limb muscles.
In order to improve his physical condition, the doctor specially made up a set of arm exercises to urge Ji Xianlin to move.
Ji Xianlin likes to sleep, and medical staff speculate that it may be the "secret" of Ji Xianlin's longevity. After dinner in the evening, I took sedative and sleep-aiding drugs around seven o'clock, that is, I would go to bed to rest. Usually Ji Xianlin sleeps for about 12 hours, and the quality of sleep is very good.
The 3 hours between breakfast and lunch are Ji Xianlin's daily working hours, and he will let his secretary or nurse read him a newspaper.
After lunch, Ji Xianlin continued to sleep for 3 hours, and got up at about 3 p.m. to meet several visitors according to his custom.
In terms of diet, Ji Xianlin pays attention to the "theory of needs". He did not have much demand for the daily diet arrangement, and only made small requests to the nurses when he really wanted to eat something, such as braised pork or lamb stew, which was one of Ji Xianlin's favorite recipes.
In addition, he also prefers roast duck, and the medical staff who care for him say that Ji Xianlin eats roast duck once a month and wants to eat dumplings stuffed with lamb and carrots every few days.
If Ji Xianlin felt that the food was not delicious, he would eat less; on the contrary, if the meal met his taste, he would eat more.
Ji Xianlin often sighed to the nurse: "Only when people eat the food they love to eat, can they digest well, absorb it well, and their bodies will be good." ”
For the staff who took care of him, they seemed to have learned in Ji Xianlin a kind of life essence of "settling down with the encounter" and "dealing with it calmly", even in the face of death.
Medical staff like to call Ji Xianlin "Grandpa", and always feel that it is quite kind. When they get along on weekdays, Ji Xianlin also does not have a little master's shelf, is very peaceful, and occasionally chats with the nurse doctor about homely things and jokes.
Compared with Ji Chengkou's father, Ji Xianlin in the eyes of the nurse is more like an ordinary old man who spends his old age in peace.
At the beginning of November 2008, Ji Cheng, who was too old, finally came to the 301 Hospital to meet his father Ji Xianlin. As soon as he entered the ward, Ji Cheng directly knelt on the ground and kowtowed to Ji Xianlin, crying and asking him, "What do you want to rebuke your son?" ”
Ji Xianlin's face was excited, but his words were as calm as ever: "The things of the past have become the past, what do I criticize you?" ”
In July of the following year, Ji Xianlin died of illness. The nurse doctors who had been with Ji Xianlin missed him very much, but his son Ji Cheng once again pushed his father to the cusp of the storm, which was very puzzling.

03, the son's family's words: The twilight son writes a book to recall his father but it is very confusing

First, Ji Cheng wrote a book reminiscing about his father, claiming to reveal the inside story of Ji Xianlin's later years.
He said that in the last period of accompanying his father, his father's attitude toward him swept away the coldness of the past, and returned to the warmth and true feelings that father and son most longed for, which was very harmonious, as if the words of the former "people with hearts" deliberately framed and slandered him were all left behind and no longer cared.
Moreover, in his later years, Ji Xianlin had said several strange words to Ji Chengnian, saying that he had long known that there were nurses who stole his paintings to sell outside, and they called Ji Xianlin "Grandpa" in person, but behind his back, they did some "stealing chickens and touching dogs", even if there was no need to set up an investigation team, Ji Xianlin also knew it. He also said that he knew that some people wanted to "poison" themselves.
Ji Cheng said that he had heard from the nurses that people with ulterior motives had told Ji Xianlin that after Ji Cheng and his wife planned to murder him with poison, he had asked his father about this matter, and Ji Xianlin's answer was "Just listen to it, never take it seriously."
Because Ji Xianlin believed in Ji Cheng, he thought that he was not that kind of person, would not say such things, and would not do such things.
In short, Ji Xianlin in Ji Chengkou's later years is very different from the "grandfather" in the mouths of nursing doctors, and his "family words" are really incomprehensible, why Ji Xianlin will have two faces in his later years, in front of his son, his performance in front of "outsiders" is not consistent, and there is an illusion of "fine points".
Second, after Ji Xianlin's death, Ji Cheng joined the dispute over Ji Xianlin's inheritance, entangled with Ji Xianlin's disciple Qian Wenzhong, Gan's daughter Wang Ru and others, and in 2010, he moved the unfinished storm back to the "table" again, causing a series of controversies.
In the book he recalls his father, he said that he intended to use the property left by his father to start a foundation, not for money, but only to make a contribution to society within his ability.
In an open letter circulating on the Internet, he said that until a year after Ji Xianlin's death, Peking University still did not return Ji Xianlin's cultural relics, thus starting a dispute with Ji Xianlin's former secretary Li Yujie and Peking University's official "return of Ji Xianlin's inheritance".
Ji Chengyizheng said that Ji Xianlin provided three declaration documents on how to deal with the inheritance during his lifetime, and explicitly stated that the cultural relics and books he kept in the Peking University Library were only handed over to Peking University for safekeeping.
However, Ji Xianlin's former secretary, Li Yujie, countered that Ji Xianlin had already made a will to hand over all the property to Peking University.
The case was investigated for several years. In 2012, the dispute between Ji Cheng and Peking University was formally filed, Ji Cheng asked Peking University to return 577 cases of Ji Xianlin's estate, and all the plaintiffs' litigation claims were rejected in the first instance.
In 2017, the second instance trial of the case began, And Ji Cheng's appeal remained the same, while Peking University did not respond to Ji Cheng's appeal. The case was not pronounced in court, and there is still no clear outcome to this day.
There is no right or wrong in this, and outsiders have no right to judge.
