Cho Ji-hoon and Cho Hwan-hyun Symphony of The fates of two of the great Go geniuses of the twentieth century

On July 26, 2015, the korean chess academy's 1st floor live TV room officially launched the "Korean Go 70th Anniversary Commemoration Of The Cho Hwan Hyun-Cho Ji Hoon Special Match", and Seo Bong-so explained the game

Cho Ji-hoon and Cho Hyun Hyun are both heroes who made Korean Go rise, and at the same time they are rivals of fate. If it is not wrong to say that Cho Hwan-hyun's opponent is Ten Seo Bong-so and Cho Ji-hoon's opponent is Kobayashi Koichi, at least on the surface. However, when Cho was interviewed or gossiped, he never said that Seo Bong-so was his opponent, and Cho Ji-hoon did not think that Kobayashi Koichi was his opponent.

The object of the secret contest in Cho Hyun's heart is Cho Ji-hoon, who also watches the increasingly powerful Korean Go and carefully measures Cho Hyun-hyun.

Rivals of Destiny - Contrasting growth processes

The two of them grew up learning Go. Although Cho was three years older, Cho went to Japan a year earlier than him. Cho Wasun-hyun was born in 1953 and Cho Ji-hoon was born in 1956. At the age of 6, Cho Ji-hoon entered the famous Kidani Dojo.

Cho Became a professional chess player in South Korea at the age of 9, which is the world's earliest entry record, which is believed to be a record that is difficult to break. In the second year of the entry section, Cao Kaoru crossed the day and entered the door of Setsuki Ken.

Kensaku Setsushi is a giant in the Japanese world of Go and is a friend and rival of Kimiya's mentor Suzuki Yoshijiro. Kensaku Setsukoshi has great influence in the Japanese Go world, big and small, and he is determined to train a top player for Japan, China and Korea.

In China, Kensaku Setsukoshi trained Wu Qingyuan, and in Japan he trained Hashimoto Utaro. Utaro Hashimoto gained fame in Japan during World War II, and in his later years founded the Kansai Chess Academy and the Japanese Chess Academy.

It was in South Korea that Se Yue-hyun made the choice of Cho Kao-hyun to fulfill his long-cherished wish, and Cho Kao-hyun became the first stage of Japan in 1967. In the years leading up to the period, Cho lived alone in a tatami room on the second floor of The Sekoshi-ken writers, and his habit of being alone and lonely was developed at this time.

Cho Ji-hoon returned home after receiving the title of Japanese celebrity, accompanied by Cho Kao-hyun

Zhao Zhixun successfully entered the section in 1969 and is a famous naughty bag and fighting king of the Kitani Dojo. Every time Zhao Zhixun caused trouble, Lady Mugu always protected Zhao Zhixun, who was from a foreign country and felt lonely. Kim InKudan, who was practicing chess at the Kidani Dojo and teaching at the Kidani Dojo, is still impressed by this.

In their time in Japan, Cho and Cho grew little by little. From middle school, Cho learned to play mahjong, and he often went to Hideyuki Fujisawa's real estate office to play Go and mahjong with young people. Cao Xuanxuan's brain is sensitive and especially able to play games, not only is Go changing with each passing day, but his mahjong skills are also getting deeper and deeper.

Kensaku Ichise asked him where all this money in his pocket came from? Cho Had to tell the truth, and as a result, he was reprimanded. The Japanese custom is for the low section to visit the high section to play chess, and as a low section, Cho Kao Hyun often goes to the Osaka branch to play chess. Every time he went out, Cho received a "travel fee", but most of the young chess players did not stay in hotels but stayed in the branches of the Japanese chess academy en masse. Cho Used the money saved as capital to fill his pockets in the future.

If Cao Xuanxuan is somewhat sidelined, then Zhao Zhixun is very solid in practicing Go. In their youth, their chess style is a force battle type, but the environment in which they learn chess is different, and the game posture of the two is very different. Cho hyun mainly studied chess at Hideyuki Fujisawa's real estate office, and developed the habit of shaking his legs without any seriousness. Zhao Zhixun was a thorough dojo cultivator, and the posture of the game had a board and an eye, but later he also did not have a positive form.

In 1969, I went to Japan as a Korean representative of the "Korea-Japan Collegiate Competition". At that time, Kimiya Shi, who was dressed in kimono, took Cho Zhixun to the airport to greet him, and I was deeply impressed by Zhao Zhixun, who was standing next to Kitani Shi in a middle school student hat. Mr. Kiso believes that Korean guests will be very happy if they see Cho Ji-hoon, and specially brought Cho Ji-hoon to pick up the station.

At that time, there was almost no international exchange of Go, and Japan, which had just developed economically, always wanted to spend some money on cultural matters, especially sparing no effort to organize international exchanges. It is the "Korea-Japan University Student Competition", and once the competition is over, there is a week-long time to visit famous places in Japan. In 1970, Japan held the "East Asia Three Kingdoms Amateur Exchange Tournament", and the first night of the festival Sakata Einan Kudan, Hayashi Haifeng Kudan and other leading Japanese Go figures participated, whether from the airport to the scenic spots, there were car transfers, and at night, they also arranged to go to the restaurant to call a kimono and a geisha with a three-stringed harp. But now, even if Lee Chang-ho waits for the Japanese race, the Japanese side will send the airport bus ticket to the end, and now the times have changed their positions.

The wrong way of military service

Born in Mokpo in 1953, Cho Kao-hyun, who was born in Mokpo in 1953, unconsciously grew to the age of 20, and in 1972 Cho Kao-hyun returned to Seoul. Although Kensaku Sekoshi expected Cho to conquer the Japanese chess world, he could only promise to "return to Japan after demobilization". Soon after, Cho served in the Air Force, and the Korean Chess Academy recognized him as a Japanese chess academy.

In Japan, Cho's progress was faster than Cho's, and the strength of Japanese Go at that time was unmatched by South Korea. Because the "Korea-Japan Professional Exchange War" has always been on the side of Japan, even for a time this event was meaningless. As a Japanese five-dan, Cho Kao-hyun once defeated the Japanese nine-dan, and the Korean chess players were greatly nervous about this. However, at the beginning, Cho Hwan-hyun easily lost chess, and although the basic theory of Korean Go was poor, the strength and chaotic warfare skills were still comparable. Cao Xuanxuan is encountering these "side tricks" that often collapse. At the same time, the obligation of the military also became a fetter for Cho Hwang-hyun to play chess, although the chief of the Air Force General Staff at that time was a chess fan, and he could occasionally participate in the game with this convenience, but the veterans of the internal affairs class gave him a headache. Fortunately, Cao Xuanxuan realized very quickly, and when he went out to compete, he always forgot to bring back cigarettes and other distributions, and this difficulty finally passed.

Although It is easy for Cho Hyun-hyun to lose, his strength is indeed very strong. The same age as Cho Hyun Hyun, Seo Bong-so was a popular figure at the time as a "celebrity", and Seo Bong-so often played chess with Cho Hoon-hyun outside of the game. Cho Hwan Hyun stayed in Japan for a long time once he returned to China, and his mother tongue has become unfamiliar as long as someone asks him to basically not refuse. Seo Bong-so often asks Cho Hyun Hyun to play a game of chess for 500 yuan.

Once Cho Hoon Hyun also made a big joke: once in the restaurant Cho Kao Hyun met the Korean Go titan Cho Nam Chul Jiu Dan. At that time, Kim Dong-myung, who had become a friend of Cho Hwang-hyun, had not yet had time to call him an honorific title, and as soon as Cho Hyun-hyun opened his mouth, he said, "Hey, have you eaten it?" "This joke has been the talk of the chess world for a long time.

In this atmosphere, Cho Can only say that he is still underheated, and his real strength is the time of rapid demobilization, that is, from 1975. At this time, Cho Kao Hyun quickly grew a long chess game, and Korean Go also followed the pace and quickly soared.

Later, in Singapore, after Seo Bong-so won the Ying Cup, Mr. Ying Chang-chi asked us at the dinner: "Korean Go was not strong in the past, but how can it develop so quickly?" Taiwan's Go wants to be strong, what should it do? ”

At that time, I replied: "The first reason why Korean Go has become strong is the return of Cho Hyun Hyun. If he hadn't returned home for military service, Korean Go wouldn't have developed today. First of all, the Korean chess player chased after the powerful Cao Xuanxuan, and the chase was almost over, and the genius Cao Xuanxuan would run a lot, and in this chase, South Korea accumulated strength. If Taiwanese Go wants to develop, Wang Licheng or Wang Minghuan must have one person return to Taiwan. ”

However, in the final analysis, it is difficult for Japan, which has a good chess environment to let chess players leave the game, and from this point of view, South Korea's compulsory military service system has made an immeasurable contribution to Korean Go. At the same time, the creation of fate left Zhao Zhixun in Japan and conquered the Eastern Ying chess world.

After being demobilized from the army, Cho wanted to return to Japan, but he could not do so due to various problems. First of all, he likes the atmosphere of Korean chess players playing chess and living together, compared to the Japanese chess players, except for the few personal exchanges between the games, the human touch is very weak. Moreover, Cho's poor family situation does not allow him to leave easily, and he needs to take care of his elderly parents.

Cho's unreturnance first struck his mentor Kensaku Sekoshi, and the suicide of the Japanese literary giant and best friend Yasunari Kawabata left him completely lonely. Therefore, the merry generation of Setsukoshi Ken chose the same way to quietly follow his friends. Therefore, the chess community even believes that The detention of Cho Kaoru Hyun became the cause of Sekoshi Kensaku's death.

Another of Cho's mentors, Fujisawa Hideyuki, often flew to Seoul to see him. Fujisawa Hideyuki then carried the wine bottle in his pocket and sighed in front of Cao Xuanxuan's face, "Pearl Secret Investment", instigating Cao Xuanxuan to fly back with him immediately. Hideyuki Fujisawa is not optimistic about Cho Ji-hoon, but believes that Cho Hyun Hyun is a genius of the time with whom he formed a double.

During this time, Cho Began to receive titles, and it increased year by year, and now it is difficult for him to leave even if he wants to. Not only is Cho unable to give up so many chess titles, but he is also entangled with the newspapers that hold news games. So Cho Hyun Hyun sat firmly in the Korean chess world and became the king. In Japan, however, Cho seems to be at best a street bully.

It is not Japan, it is the Korean media and chess fans who estimate that South Korea's chess strength is two sons worse than Japan's. It was at this time that Cho Ji-hoon rose rapidly in Japan. He won his first championship at the age of 18 over chess champion Masao Kato Kudan. More famous is Cho Ji-hoon's statement in an interview: I came to Japan to get celebrities. Sure enough, in 1980, Cho Ji-hoon successfully defeated the Hero of Otake, Jiudan, to challenge celebrities.

This first caused a sensation in South Korea, and the Korean media, which was not very enthusiastic about Go, rushed to report on this incident, and the author can now remember that the cultural ministers of the major newspapers at that time cut the figures of black and white chess all night in order to publish chess scores, and boiled their eyes with paste. In short, Korean youth became the first person to play Go alone in Japan, which is a feat that requires a large book feature in any case.

Cao Zhao played a special game

First Showdown: Rising and Falling

Finally, when Cho Ji-hoon returned home heroically, he properly arranged a match between "the first person in Japan" and the "first person in Korea". It was the winter of 1980, and one game was a TV game and the other was an official game. Cho Ji-hoon received an astronomical amount of matchmaking fees, and Cho Also got a lot, but only one-fifth of Cho's. At this time, Cho Hyun Hyun understood that Korea's first-man chess player was nothing. Both games were lost by Cho Hyun-hyun, and some people even said privately that "there may be two sons apart" Moreover, the posture of Cho Ji-hoon's game that appeared on TV was praised as "everyone's style", but instead Cao Xuanxuan shook his legs in the TV camera, and was really ridiculed by chess fans.

Soon after, on December 31st, the night where the Korean Chess Academy is located, Jongno-jong-dong, Kim In-9 Duan, Kim Joon-ho 4-dan and the author and other people who usually drink well gathered to keep the New Year. The strange thing is that Cao Xuanxuan, who did not drink on this day, was also present, and he suddenly disappeared again after two glasses of liquor.

After the banquet was over, we looked for a nearby hotel, and in the darkness of the middle of winter, someone was holding on to the wall of the alley and barely crawling to the hotel. He tried to get up and was paralyzed, crawling to the entrance of the hotel and struggling or collapsing. At first glance, it turned out to be Cho Hwan-hyun. Cho was probably too sad and his self-esteem was seriously frustrated. He was lying down on the road with wine and suddenly felt frightened and remembered that there was a frequent hotel nearby, so he managed to climb over. In 1980, Cho Ji-hoon flew in the sky, and Cho Hyun-hyun climbed like this, but this was only the first act.

Until the mid-1980s, Zhao Zhixun continued to rise. Zhao Zhixun's strength is strong, in the selection of Japanese chess fans "the strongest ten people in history beyond the times", Zhao Zhixun always ranked first or second. Japanese Go has legendary strong men who are revered as "chess saints", namely former sheng dao ce, hou sheng zhanghe, xiu ce and Wu Qingyuan, who are directly called qi sheng. Cho Ji-hoon's ranking is often ranked at the top of the list by Japanese chess fans over the "chess saint".

In 1983, Cho challenged Hideyuki Fujisawa to win the Chess Saint with a big reversal of four consecutive wins after three consecutive defeats. When Cho first arrived in Japan, the biggest chess battle was the Celebrity War, followed by the Ben in Fang Battle. Later, in a dispute over the increase in bonuses, the Japan Chess Academy transferred the celebrity battle hosted by the former "Yomiuri Shimbun" to the "Asahi Shimbun". In the stalemate, the Japanese chess academy proposed that the Yomiuri Shimbun create the largest chess jihad to solve the problem. Previously, in order to sanctify the name of "chess saint", the Japanese chess academy has not had a "chess saint" to name a chess battle, and now this taboo has finally been broken. After winning the chess holy war, Zhao Zhixun was the first in the Japanese chess world to complete the great cause of the "Great Triple Crown".

However, in early 1986, Zhao Zhixun suffered an unexpected car accident, when Kobayashi Hikaru challenged Zhao Zhixun's chess holy war seven pieces of chess was about to start. Compared with Japan, South Korea's chess battles are relatively simple, and such a car accident can naturally postpone the game time as appropriate. However, once Japan has determined the date of the game, there is no further delay in the thunder, and even the famous Ben in-fang "atomic bomb" challenge chess has appeared.

Cho Ji-hoon and Kobayashi Koichi famous wheelchair matchup

Wheelchair match and Ying Cup

Despite the strong opposition of the attending doctor, Cho Zhixun still insisted on the game and said a famous sentence: "Play chess with your life". It is customary for Japan's Grand Triple Crowns to tour the local challenge chess, so the "Yomiuri Shimbun" spent a huge amount of money chartering planes to renovate so that Cho Ji-hoon's wheelchair could be easily boarded, and the game room was modified. At this time, Kobayashi Koichi said something very wonderful: "According to the principle, the game should be carried out on the tatami, but Zhao Zhixun is in a wheelchair, and I have to sit on a chair." This is not fair, I also asked to change the chair. ”

On the day of the match, Zhao Zhixun hit the analgesic and hung a hanging bottle on his body. Ordinary people may not be able to face such a Zhao Zhixun, but Kobayashi Koichi calmly insists on his own requirements. Zhao Zhixun later expressed his heartfelt respect for Koichi Kobayashi's true demeanor in this profession. At the beginning of the fourth game, there was a rare scene in the game room: Zhao Zhixun sat in a wheelchair, and a small platform was set up opposite the chess board to form a tatami mat, and Kobayashi Koichi sat on it.

At the beginning of the fourth game, Kobayashi Won a winning streak, and the chess title and the position of "Japan's First Man" were all transferred to his account. From this time on, Zhao Zhixun began to go downhill, and after experiencing a failure he had never experienced before, he began to be frustrated and wandering. Soon, Zhao Zhixun lost celebrities and Ben Yinfang into a situation without a crown.

It was this season, in 1988, that the World Series began. In April, the Fujitsu Cup was cut in Tokyo, and in May, the "Ying Cup" was held at the Chinese Town Hall. The Ying Cup winner has a prize fund of up to $400,000, and it is also the largest chess battle to date.

At that time, there was no Korea in the vision of Japan and China, and only Cho Kao-hyun was the turn of the sixteen seeded places. In the Ying Cup, Zhao Zhixun lost half-eye to Nie Weiping, who was soaring, and Cao Xuanxuan miraculously reversed under the disadvantage of inevitable defeat, and broke through the ghost gate with one and a half eyes.

That night, Zhao Zhixun cried out at the dinner party, and he complained to himself that "my Go is over", which made the people around him confused. In 1980, it was Cho Whoo-hyun who shed tears, but in 1988 it was Cho's turn.

Cho became a "celebrity" in 1980 and the "first person in Japan" in 1983, winning the Grand Triple Crown for the first time in history. By 1988, he not only lost his title, but also suffered a bitter defeat to Nie Weiping in the Ying Cup. In a sense, zhao Zhixun had already got what he deserved. Even if he can't make any more achievements, no one will laugh at his strength and the results he has already achieved.

However, Cho Hyun Hyun is different, although he has become the full champion several times in China, but the South Korean media do not think that this is anything remarkable, more or less the situation at the bottom of the well. The world Go community also refuses to recognize Korean Go, believing that only Cho Hwan Hyun is commendable, but there are too few matches with the strong, and the strength is still limited. This cannot be considered all wrong, not only did Cho Kao-hyun lose to the "first Japanese man" in the Fujitsu Cup held in Tokyo in April 1988, but all the Korean chess players participating in the competition were slashed and slashed. However, more than a month later, Cao Xuanxuan's "narrow road to the wrongdoer" once again encountered Kobayashi Koichi, and the chess game was full of defeat early.

In fact, Cho has always had a superfluous reverence for Japanese Go, believing that he is the only one in South Korea who has a good fight, and the others are still too far apart. Cao Xuanxuan grew up in Japanese Go, and Japanese Go was formed in his mind for a while, and it was difficult to push down.

However, where Cho Hyun Hyun was really killed by Kobayashi Hikari, the fear began to disappear and let go. Perhaps Kobayashi Was shocked by the momentum of Cao Xuanxuan's trapped beast, and began to retreat step by step, slowing down one after another, and finally miraculously reversed.

This round was too important, and then Cao Xuanxuan successfully defeated Lin Haifeng to enter the final, and played a fateful duel with Nie Weiping. If there is no duel with Kobayashi Kwang, not only the champion of the Cho Kao Hwan Kyung Cup, but even the rise of Korean Go will lag far behind.

The reason for spending so much ink on this innings is to illustrate the fact that it is often the smallest details that determine a major event. People who do great things must be strict in details and know how to persevere. It should be said that Cho Kao Hyun's innings against Kobayashi Koichi is normal, but his persistence under the pressure of incomparable weights has had an immeasurable impact not only on him personally, but also on Korean Go.

On the contrary, Nie Weiping's performance in the fourth set of the Ying Cup final was another look. After Nie Weiping led 1-2 in the first three sets, the situation of winning in the fourth set was almost unshakable, but at the juncture of declaring victory, Nie Weiping ended up wavering, and on the outside, it seemed that Nie Weiping himself gave up the victory, in fact, Nie Weiping did not resist the temptation and pressure that victory was coming.

After the score was pulled 2-2, Nie Weiping basically fell down on his own in the fifth set, which was a brittle defeat of fate after losing morale, and it was also a heroic tragedy.

The essence of victory and defeat is like this, looking at the major events in history, as long as you survive the most difficult difficulties, you will turn around. I still remember the dark room of the hotel, where Cho Hyun-hyun stared alone at the paper envelope containing the bonus on the table.
