In November 2022, the National Health Commission released the Growth Standards for Children Under 7 Years of Age, which was updated 13 years after the previous version of the standard in 2009.

Specific query method:

Step 1: Find the corresponding form according to the child's gender;

Step 2: Find the child's age in the first column, look sideways to the right, and find a value close to the child's height;

Step 3: Look up along the height column to find the percentile value of your child's height.

Step 4: Refer to the average height value and compare the child's height. The column P50 in the table (red box in the figure) is the average height value of children of the same age and gender.

The higher the percentage of a child's height, the more pointed the figure.

Conversely, the lower the number, the lower the size.

For example: a 5-year-old girl with a height of 115cm.

View the table: The child's height is between 113.6cm ~ 116.1cm, and the corresponding percentile value is P75 ~ P90, which belongs to the "upper middle" level.

It shows that the height of this child exceeds 75%~90% of female treasures of the same age.

Seeing this, some parents may be anxious:

Height percentile, is it normal to be P50 or above?

Hold your horses!

Between P3~P97, and the growth rate is within the normal range, it is normal.

But if the child's height has always been in the "short" (<P3) column, it should be taken to the endocrinology department, pediatric department, and growth and development clinic of a regular hospital.

Conversely, it is not necessarily a good thing for children to stand out early (>P97).

Many children who have been taller than children of the same age are more than 6~7 cm, many of them have older bones, have problems of early development, short growth cycle, and epiphysis closes in advance and stops growing.

Growth and development criteria for children aged 7-18 years

The growth and development standards for children aged 7-18 can mainly refer to the "Evaluation of the Height Development Level of Children and Adolescents aged 7-18" (2018 version) issued by the National Health Commission. There are also boys' and girls' versions.

Boy's version

Girls' version

According to this standard, the child's height development is divided into 5 levels:

Bottom: Height <-2SD

Lower-middle: —2SD ≤ Height < —1SD

Medium: —1SD ≤ Height ≤ +1SD

Upper middle: +1SD < Height ≤ +2SD

Top: Height > +2SD

(Note: SD is standard deviation)

Similarly, the "median" in the table represents the average height value of people of the same age and gender.

Height in the -2SD and +2SD range, both are normal.

But if the child's height is <-2SD, it has reached the "short" standard, and it is recommended to see a doctor in time.

The two peaks of a child's height development

First, infancy.

After birth to about 1 year of age, it is the stage with the fastest growth rate, growing about 25 cm.

1~3 years old, the growth rate of height gradually slowed down, but still at the peak of development, a total growth of about 20cm.

After the age of 3, the growth rate decreases again, and before puberty, the annual increase is about 5~7cm.

Second, adolescence.

Under normal circumstances, boys from puberty to epiphyseal line completely closed, can grow about 28~30cm tall, girls can increase in height 20~25cm.

Usually, it is best for parents to measure the height of their children regularly. If your child doesn't grow enough each year, see a doctor:

Before 3 years old: < 7cm per year

3 years old ~ pre-puberty: < 5cm per year

Puberty: < 6cm per year
