Born in November 1896 in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, Yang Zai'an graduated from Guangya Academy in 1914 and traveled east to Yokohama, Japan in 1915 to study, during which he came into contact with various Western schools of thought and studied Japanese translations of Marxism. The following year, Yang Zaian returned to his hometown from Japan and later worked as a tutor in Macau.

  In 1918, Yang Zaian went to Guangzhou Shimin Middle School as the director of teaching affairs and concurrently served as a reporter for Guangdong Zhonghua Xinbao. After the May Fourth Movement in 1919, Yang Became a Staunch Follower of Marxism. From July 12, 1919, he published the "World Theory" introducing various schools of thought in the "Popular University" column of the Guangdong Zhonghua New Daily for 19 consecutive days. Among them, the longest and most influential article "Marxism" is the earliest systematic introduction to Marxism in South China. In this article, Yang Zaian praised Marx's Capital as a "holy book of socialism" and openly pointed out that "the present social state, the period when the real working people rose up for revolution in order to seek transformation." Yang Zaian thus became one of the pioneers in propagating Marxism in Our country.

  The large number of articles written by Yang Zaian introducing Marxism made certain ideological preparations for the birth of the Party organization in Guangdong. In 1921, Yang Zaian was introduced by Tan Pingshan to join the Communist Party of China and was one of the early members of the Communist Party of China. Yang Zai'an's home, the Yang Family Ancestral Hall, became a stronghold for the secret activities of party organizations. In 1922, he was appointed acting secretary of the Guangdong District Committee of the Socialist Youth League and continued to spread Marxism through newspapers and periodicals.

In June 1923, the three major congresses of the Communist Party of China were held in Guangzhou, and it was decided that the Kuomintang and the Communist Party would cooperate, and Yang Zaian was sent to serve in the Kuomintang; after the First Congress of the Kuomintang in January 1924, he served as the secretary and acting director of the Organization Department of the Kuomintang Central Committee, and in the autumn of the same year, he was appointed as a supervisory member of the Guangdong District Committee of the Communist Party of China.

In 1925, after the May Thirtieth Massacre in Shanghai, Yang Zaian and Deng Zhongxia went to Hong Kong to join Forces with Su Zhaozheng and others to launch a provincial strike in Hong Kong. In November of the same year, Yang Zaian was elected as a member of the Standing Committee and Organization Director of the Guangdong Provincial Party Department of the Kuomintang, and in January 1926, he was elected as a member of the Central Executive Committee and a standing committee member at the Second National Congress of the Kuomintang.

  In May 1927, the Fifth National Congress of the Communist Party of China established the First Discipline Inspection Agency in the History of the Party, the Central Supervision Commission, and Yang Zaian was elected as a member of the Central Supervision Commission. After the defeat of the Great Revolution, Yang Zaian attended the 1987 Session of the Communist Party of China as a member of the Central Control Commission, and then went to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and other places to carry out revolutionary movements.

  In 1929, Yang Zaian returned to Shanghai, worked in the central organs of the Communist Party of China, participated in the editing of party periodicals, and in 1930 became the deputy director of the Peasant Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

  In July 1931, Yang Zai'an was arrested for informing traitors and imprisoned at the Songhu Police Headquarters. He took a firm stand in prison, sternly refused several attempts by Chiang Kai-shek to surrender, and was secretly executed on the spot by Chiang Kai-shek's orders. On the eve of righteousness, he wrote the poem "The Night Before Death as a Warning to Fellow Prisoners": "Generously board the car, and the phase is complete."
