Far away from the mountains and seas, close to the ancient and modern. Columbia's School of Education has more than a century of deep ties with China. Columbia University can be called the cradle of modern and contemporary Chinese educators, and it has also had a huge impact on modern China.

In 1917, Zhang Boling went to Columbia University's School of Education to study higher education, studied educational theory under the famous professors Dewey, Meng Lu, Keboqu and Thorndike, and visited nearly 50 universities and primary and secondary schools in the United States. Since then, Columbia University has forged an indissoluble relationship with Mr. Zhang Boling and Nankai Education.

After returning to China, Zhang Boling said, "Over the past year or so, I have examined their national conditions and the spirit of the people, and I have learned that education is the foundation of a country. And the talent of a country is all produced by universities. At present, china's education is not prosperous, and there is a shortage of qualified personnel, which cannot help but make people feel excited and think, and we must immediately establish universities. ”

Zhang Boling's experience studying abroad at Columbia University's School of Education gave him a firmer belief in education. Nankai University, founded in October 1919, is a convergence of Eastern and Western cultures in education, marking a stage of exploration of Zhang Boling's education to the world.

At the beginning of 1929, Zhang Boling went to the United States again to investigate. The four-month expedition, which included visits to Universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia, concluded that educational reform must be adapted to the needs of the country's social development. It is necessary to create Nankai, that is, a university with Chinese history and Chinese society as the academic background and the solution of Chinese problems as the educational goal. This was a powerful correction to The Chinese education that was still in the "Westernization of All" and copied and copied from the West at that time, and it was a major progress in Zhang Boling's educational thinking, marking a turning point in his study of European and American education, and indicating the inevitable trend of Chinese education from traditional education to modern education.

In 1946, Columbia University awarded Mr. Zhang Boling an honorary doctorate in literature. In 1948, The Crown Press of Columbia University published "Don't Have China: A Collection of Essays commemorating Zhang Boling's Seventieth Birthday" to pay tribute to Zhang Boling.

Cao Xuetao delivered a speech at the book donation ceremony, introducing the origins of Zhang Boling, Nankai and Columbia. Cao Xuetao said that in the past two decades, the exchange of high-level visits and teachers and students between the two universities has become more frequent, and the two sides will strengthen the interaction of research work in the future and further enhance the educational and cultural exchanges and mutual learning between the two schools and even the two countries. Nankai people will continue to uphold the excellent school-running concept of senior educators such as the old principal Zhang Boling, comprehensively accelerate the construction of outstanding Nankai, and cultivate more "public energy" talents with the responsibility of the times and a global vision. Nankai University is willing to work with Columbia University to continue to strengthen in-depth cooperation in the fields of teacher-student exchanges and scientific research cooperation, and jointly contribute to the development of global higher education.

Mr. Zhang Yuanlong delivered a speech at the ceremony: "The Zhang Boling Research Association has focused on the study of Zhang Boling's educational thought for nearly 20 years, issued a large number of publications and research results, provided a large amount of materials for China's modern education research, and put the summarized educational concepts, educational laws and experiences of President Zhang Boling into educational practice. The deepening of educational reform needs to learn from the world's experience in educational innovation. I hope to take today's event as an opportunity to strengthen the cooperation and exchange between Nankai University and Columbia University, and open up a discussion on new ways of global education governance. ”

It is understood that "Mr. Fang Da of the Lead Character Flow - Zhang Boling in Modern Newspapers and Periodicals" was planned by the Zhang Boling Research Association and is the first part of the "Public Energy Library", which was published and distributed by the Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences Publishing House. Cao Xuetao and Zhang Yuanlong wrote the preface separately, and were jointly edited by Zhang Lanpu, an archival expert at Nankai University, and Liang Jisheng, a scholar of school history.

The book has a total of 750,000 words, edited by the editors from more than 70 newspapers and periodicals in the late Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China and the early People's Republic of China, more than 6,000 articles on Zhang Boling, and 296 articles published by people from all walks of life who are contemporaries of Mr. Zhang Boling, spanning more than 40 years (from 1908 to 1949), which is accompanied by Mr. Zhang's lifelong education. The book reflects Mr. Zhang Boling's relatively plump impression in the eyes of his contemporaries in his lifetime and its extensive impact on society, and also provides a context for on-site restoration for understanding and studying Zhang Boling today.

Cao Xuetao wrote in the preface to the book: "Looking back, Zhang Boling, the founding principal of the school, with his grand and advanced educational concept and unique and extraordinary personal charm, has made irreplaceable contributions to the establishment and growth of Nankai School, which has had a vital impact on the development and progress of Chinese education. "The strong voice and profound connotation of the times reflected by President Zhang's many educational theses and aphorisms have made my generation deaf and deaf, and made the industry strive to be strong, especially the 'patriotic three questions' that were highly praised by General Secretary Xi Jinping, and let Zhang Boling's educational thought shine with an endless brilliant light."

Professor Stephanie Rowley, Executive Vice Dean and Provost of Columbia University's School of Education, attended the book donation ceremony online and delivered a speech, saying, "Mr. Zhang Boling is a pioneer of modern education in China, has made outstanding contributions to China's education cause and Sino-US cultural exchanges, and has a major influence in the world. I am very pleased and sincerely thank Nankai University and the Zhang Boling Research Association for their generous donations. ”

Professor Cheng Henan, Executive Director of the China Education Research Center of Columbia University, delivered a speech entitled "Nankai and Columbia: A Model of Sino-US Educational Exchanges and Cooperation in the Past Century", reviewed the deep relationship between Nankai University and Columbia University, shared the story of Mr. Zhang Boling's study in Colombia, and expressed the common expectations of the two universities to expand cooperation and exchanges in the future.

Zhang Lanpu, editor of "Mr. Fangda of Lead Characters - Zhang Boling in Modern Newspapers and Periodicals" and a research librarian of the Archives of Nankai University, delivered a speech. He said, "In the process of editing this book, we deeply feel Mr. Zhang Boling's selfless feelings of dedication to education and the strong will to work hard and hard. In the future, we will continue to study Zhang Boling as always, and contribute to the friendly cooperation between Columbia University and Nankai University and zhang Boling Research Association. ”

Zhang Lanpu also presented a poem on behalf of co-editor Professor Liang Jisheng: "Chinese and American scholars are full of wind, and books are used as a mediator for the deceased." Monroe Boling galloped for a long time, and the Hudson River spread friendship. The history of Nankai Columbia's exchanges, a total of the first sound of the year. ”

More than 100 years ago, Professor Monroe of Columbia University said that the mutual exchange and nourishment of education can benefit us from each other. As Professor Gu Mingyuan, a famous Chinese educator, said: "Education is the seed of peace, and education is the bridge of international understanding."

In recent years, columbia University's Center for Chinese Education Research has been actively engaged in and promoted research on the early group of Chinese educators studying at Columbia University and their interaction with related American educators, and has achieved outstanding results. This book donation will surely further strengthen the academic exchanges between the Zhang Boling Research Association and the China Education Research Center of Columbia University, strengthen the cooperation between Nankai University and Columbia University, promote the exchange and cooperation of education culture between China and the United States, and enlighten the education reform in China today.
