A chiefdom is a common form of political organization in Cameroon in the past, generally consisting of one or more villages or communities ruled by chiefs. Today, the chiefdom has lost most of its traditional power, but the chieftain still has influence within the chiefdom as a spiritual leader. Located in the western region of Cameroon, the Batufang chiefdom was established at the end of the 16th century and has now passed down to the 14th generation of chiefs. The chiefdom's palace contains a sleeping quarter, a council hall, a servant's residence, a garden, etc. In 2012, parts of the Batufang Chiefdom Palace were converted into a museum and opened to the public.
