Kiyoharu Matsumoto (1909–1992)

A social reasoning writer, a generation of grandmasters who cannot be surpassed in the speculative literary world.

Born in 1909 in Ogura Kita-ku, Kitakyushu City, he was engaged in miscellaneous work and printing.

In 1951, he created "Saigo Banknote", officially became a writer and was shortlisted for the Naoki Prize. In 1953, he won the Wasagawa Prize for "The Biography of a Certain Kokura Diary".

In 1957, he began serializing speculative fiction in magazines, which became very popular, which led to the "social" trend of Japanese speculative fiction. Writers such as Keigo Higashino and Miyuki Miyabe were deeply influenced by it.

Kiyoharu Matsumoto was able to point out social problems to the point, and even portrayed small people into three points. He does not render bloody violence, but impresses the reader with plain and delicate words. Therefore, the novels he created are both wonderful and easy to read, and highly literary.

His works have been adapted into more than 500 films and TV series, and have had a profound impact on the entire Japanese literary and art community. To this day, he still has many loyal readers.
