Guy Pène du Bois (January 4, 1884 – July 18, 1958) was a 20th-century American painter, art critic and educator. Born in the United States to a French family, his work depicts the culture and society around him: cafes, theaters, and hipsters in the twenties.
He began his artistic training in 1899, when he entered the New York Institute of Art under the painter William Merritt Chase. In 1902 he attended Robert Henri's painting class, and Henry's teachings made him pay more attention to everyday life in his own art. Pène du Bois traveled to Europe in 1905 to study under the tutelage of Théophile Steinlen, but returned to the United States the following year after his father's death. He was a close friend of Edward Hopper and the best man at his wedding to Josephine Hopper. They remain lifelong friends.
