The driver assistance system is only responsible for the detection and response of some targets and events, and when the driver requests the automation system to exit, the car can immediately release control of the system. Features such as FCW Front Collision Warning and LDW Lane Departure Warning are classified as Level 0 autonomous driving.

Level 1 is partial assisted driving, and like level 0, it belongs to assisted driving with obvious restrictions, the driver can activate and close the auxiliary driving system, and can take over the vehicle immediately at any time, and the vehicle of this level has the ability to control the direction or acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle. ACC Adaptive Cruise or LKA Lane Keeping Assist is categorized here.

Level 2 is the combination of assisted driving, in the continuous vehicle lateral and longitudinal motion control, will be fully responsible for the automatic driving system, the vehicle has both adaptive cruise and lane keeping assist functions, but the driver still has to take over the vehicle at any time, otherwise there is a problem, the manufacturer is not responsible.

Level 3 is conditional automatic driving, is a watershed between assisted driving and automatic driving, the driver can let go of their hands and feet, while the attention can be diverted from the driving environment for a long time, and once there is a problem, the manufacturer is responsible. But that doesn't mean the driver can sit back and take over a faulty vehicle if the system fails or exceeds operating conditions.

Level 4 is highly automatic driving, still belongs to the restricted automatic driving, when the automatic driving system is activated, the driver's driver role becomes a passenger, no longer a backup user, unless the automatic driving system artificially withdraws, the driver's role can be restored. In fact, at this level of automatic driving, the driver's seat is no longer standard.

Level 5 is fully autonomous driving, which is basically the same as Level 4 in function, but in the scope of design and operation, there are no longer restrictions on operating conditions, except for restrictions such as commercial and regulatory factors, and at the same time, the automatic driving system can independently complete all operations and decisions.

Before the implementation of the national standard for autonomous driving, the main reference in China was the automatic driving classification standard of the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The main difference between the new national standard and the SAE automatic driving classification is that the national standard stipulates that "target and event detection and response" is completed by the driver and the system for level 0 to 2 automatic driving. SAE requires that the goals, events and decision-making tasks of L0 to L2 autonomous vehicles be completed by the driver. And the national standard requires all levels of autonomous driving to allow the release of control of the system, which SAE did not mention. There is little difference in other aspects.
