Initiated and funded by Mr. Zhang Hai, the Chinese Book Association's Western Book Rookie Series Calligraphy Seminar was grandly opened at Zhanghai Calligraphy Art Museum on May 13, 2012, lasting a total of 5 years, the training course ended in November 2017, divided into three phases, each of which opened five majors of calligraphy, cursive calligraphy, calligraphy, seal engraving and theory, a total of 15 classes, trained from 12 western provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government (including Sichuan Province, Guizhou Province, Yunnan Province, Shaanxi Province, Gansu Province, Qinghai Province, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Nearly 1,000 trainees from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Tibet Autonomous Region, Chongqing Municipality) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.
The teaching concept of the training class, "the original is clear, the classics are returned, the academic and the study are both academic, and the moral and artistic progress are both advanced" has inspired the trainees to practice diligently and improve day by day in the past ten years, and they have become the seed force for the development of the western calligraphy cause.
According to incomplete statistics, from the beginning of the class to October 2019, 670 trainees of the seminar were selected for various exhibitions sponsored by the China Book Association, and 54 people won awards; 37 people served as vice chairmen, 2 secretaries-general and 10 deputy secretaries-general in 12 western provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps Book Association. Up to now, as the backbone of the backbone, the western trainees have trained more than 8,000 adults, more than 10,680 teenagers, and more than 500 calligraphy students in colleges and universities.
