Pan Da (Pan Bingjie) graduated from the China Academy of Arts. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees are all majors in calligraphy and painting, and are visiting professors of Sichuan College of Culture and Art. He was admitted to the China Academy of Arts with the first place in the country, and won the first class scholarship every year during his studies, and won the title of Outstanding Graduate of the China Academy of Arts in 2018. His calligraphy and painting works have been selected for many national professional exhibitions and won awards, and his works have been collected by major collection institutions and individuals.

My sense of learning

Stepping into the path of art, I don't feel that ten years have passed. For ordinary people, ten years are at a time, but for an artist, success or failure, ten years is enough.

Artists are divided into two categories, one is the talent type, this kind of person is very sensitive to art, can quickly find the law in art history, and then create their own unique artistic style, but this kind of person is very few. The second category belongs to the mechanics school, this type of artist gradually forms his own artistic style through his own diligence and unremitting pursuit. Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, Xu Beihong, Huang Binhong, and others who made important achievements in painting in the last century have mentioned in many places that a large part of their achievements are attributed to the word diligence. Zhang Daqian is undoubtedly a model of diligent painters, and during the War of Resistance Against Japan, when Zhang Daqian lived in Qingcheng Mountain, he painted nearly 1500 paintings in two and a half years. Zhang Daqian's autobiography can be seen as his tireless pursuit of art, he once said: "For art, it should not be three points of personnel and seven days, but should be seven points of personnel and three days, no matter how good your talent is, it is not possible without merit." 1 Of course, painting is not a painting that blindly does not think about it, Lu Yushao mentioned in the "Discussion on Landscape Painting":

Some people often hate that the painting time is too small, if the painting time is too small, it will hinder the improvement of painting, but from morning to night, the pen does not stop painting, and it may not be able to improve a lot. The first need to think more, always think, have a "draw" word brewed in the brain, coupled with appropriate muscle training, so that it does not harm less time, but also can achieve the purpose of improvement. 2

Zhang Daqian and Lu Yushao attributed their lifelong painting achievements to their own learning methods. These quotations from the previous painters are of great benefit to beginners.

In recent years, I have devoted all my time and energy to my favorite traditions, including calligraphy, seal engraving, and Chinese painting. A successful bookmaker and painter must have a personal appearance, which is the style and the goal of the artist's life. But how to establish oneself is a very difficult problem. Many people want to start their own family when they first learn calligraphy and painting, which is very bad. Zhang Daqian mentioned in "Painting Talk":

A successful painter, the painter's skills have reached the state of transformation, there is no fixed way of painting can restrain him, limit him. The so-called "looking down on all things", "from the heart", painting skillfully, why stick to the rules, but beginners, still follow the rules, step by step.

Many friends who are new to calligraphy and painting do not have the innate ability, and if they do not learn the tradition step by step, they will eventually achieve nothing. I like Mi Fu's creative idea of "collecting ancient characters", and when I first learned calligraphy and painting, the more I learned about tradition, the more helpful it was for my future creations. The ancients provided us with countless success stories, and what reason do we have to turn a blind eye to them! Just as the so-called Li Keyan and Lu Yushao often mentioned, "use the greatest skill to fight in, use the greatest courage to fight out." Guo Xi mentioned the law of learning calligraphy in "Lin Quan Gao Zhi":

The study of painting by man is no different from the study of books. The book takes the bell, the king, the yu, and the willow, and it will be like it for a long time. As for the adult Masters, if I am not in one family, I will take both sides and discuss the examination widely, so that I can become a family of my own, and then I will get it. 3

I follow this rule when I study calligraphy, Chinese painting, and seal engraving. In the study of calligraphy, the beginner Yan Zhenqing and QingZhuan, when I was in college, combed through the entire history of calligraphy, and finally determined the personal preferences of the history of calligraphy. I started with the Han seal, and after combing the history of seal carving, I was obsessed with the Ming and Qing dynasties, such as Deng Shiru, Wu Rangzhi, Xu Sangeng, Zhao Zhiqian, etc.

Many people in the contemporary painting world flaunt the Song and Yuan dynasties, but there are a few people who really understand the essence of Song and Yuan painting, most of whom are just Ye Gonghaolong. The real classic of the Song and Yuan Dynasties is not the finest workmanship, but the rationality of Song and Yuan paintings. Zhao Mengfu has a saying: "Painting is expensive and has ancient meanings, if there is no ancient meaning, although the work is useless, the present people know that the pen is slender and the color is rich, so they claim to be experts." As everyone knows, the ancient meaning is both a loss and a hundred diseases. "There is still a lot we need to dig into for the essence of the Song and Yuan Dynasties.

Learning Song and Yuan painting, not all Song and Yuan are used by me, all of them are used without screening, which is unrealistic in terms of ability and energy. I studied Song and Yuan painting, choosing the classics that I liked artists, such as landscape painters, Dong Yuan, Ju Ran, Li Cheng, Guo Xi, Fan Kuan, etc. of the Five Dynasties of the Northern Song Dynasty, while in the ink flower ink bird, I chose the works of Li Po, Wen Tong and Su Shi of the same period as the object of the law. The Southern Song Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty were also the golden age of landscapes and flowers, such as the Southern Song Dynasty painters Li Tang, Li Di, Liang Kai, Muxi, the Yuan Dynasty Zhao Yimen and the Yuan Sijia Huang Zijiu, Ni Yunlin, Wang Shuming, Wu Zhonggui, etc., each artist has his own style, take the elements in their paintings that impress me for my use, paving the way for the formation of their own style in the future.

Many friends should be for reasons of etiquette, thinking that I am very sensitive to art. In fact, I still have a relatively clear understanding of myself, ten years of study is the first step in the long march, and only by diligently pursuing it in the future can I take this art path farther and broader.
