Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released statistics on the completion of the main indicators of the communication industry in the first quarter of 2022.
The data shows that in the first quarter, the overall operation of the communication industry was stable and good. The growth rate of telecommunications service revenue has increased, and the total amount of telecommunications services has grown rapidly; the construction and application of new infrastructure such as 5G and gigabit optical networks have been steadily advanced, and the communication supply capacity has been continuously enhanced; the growth of emerging services such as cloud computing has been prominent, mobile data traffic has continued to grow rapidly, and the new momentum of industry development has continued to increase.

Overall operation
The growth rate of telecommunications business revenue has been steady and rising, and the total amount of telecommunications services has maintained rapid growth. In the first quarter, the total revenue of telecommunications services reached 393.5 billion yuan, an increase of 9.3% year-on-year, and the growth rate increased by 2.8 percentage points year-on-year, an increase of 0.3 percentage points over January and February. The total amount of telecommunications services at constant prices in the previous year increased by 23.9% year-on-year.

The revenue growth rate of fixed Internet broadband services fell slightly. In the first quarter, the three basic telecommunications enterprises completed the Internet broadband business revenue of 58.7 billion yuan, an increase of 8.7% year-on-year, the growth rate fell by 2.9 percentage points year-on-year, accounting for 14.9% of the telecommunications business revenue, driving the growth of telecommunications business revenue by 1.3 percentage points.
Revenue from the mobile data traffic business grew at a slow rate. In the first quarter, the three basic telecommunications enterprises completed mobile data traffic business revenue of 160.9 billion yuan, an increase of 1.7% year-on-year, accounting for 40.9% of the telecom business revenue, driving the growth of telecom business revenue by 0.7 percentage points.
Revenue from emerging businesses is growing rapidly. The three basic telecommunications enterprises actively developed emerging services such as IPTV, Internet data centers, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, and completed a total of 79.7 billion yuan in emerging business revenue in the first quarter, an increase of 36.3% year-on-year, accounting for 20.3% of telecommunications business revenue, driving telecommunications business revenue to increase by 5.9 percentage points. Among them, the revenue of cloud computing and big data increased by 138.1% and 59.1% respectively year-on-year, the revenue of data center business increased by 19.8% year-on-year, and the revenue of Internet of Things business increased by 23.9% year-on-year.

Voice business revenue declined further. In the first quarter, the three basic telecom enterprises completed fixed voice and mobile voice service revenue of 5.12 billion yuan and 27.3 billion yuan, down 12.4% and 4.8% year-on-year, respectively, accounting for 8.2% of the total telecommunications business revenue, accounting for 1.4 percentage points year-on-year.

Development of telecommunications subscribers
The scale of fixed broadband access users has grown steadily, and the number of gigabit users has continued to expand. As of the end of March, the total number of fixed Internet broadband access users in the three basic telecommunications enterprises reached 551 million, a net increase of 15.13 million from the end of the previous year. Among them, the fixed Internet broadband access users with access rates of 100Mbps and above reached 514 million, accounting for 93.3% of the total number of users, accounting for 0.3 percentage points of increase compared with the end of the previous year; the number of fixed Internet broadband access users with access rates of 1000Mbps and above reached 45.96 million, a net increase of 11.4 million over the end of the previous year.

The scale of mobile phone users is steadily increasing, and 5G users are developing rapidly. As of the end of March, the total number of mobile phone subscribers in the three basic telecommunications companies reached 1.66 billion, a net increase of 18.2 million from the end of the previous year. Among them, 5G mobile phone users reached 403 million, a net increase of 48.11 million over the end of the previous year, accounting for 24.3% of mobile phone users, accounting for 2.7 percentage points higher than the end of the previous year.
Cellular IoT users are growing rapidly, and IPTV subscribers are steadily increasing. As of the end of March, the three basic telecommunications enterprises have developed 1.52 billion cellular IoT end users, a net increase of 119 million over the end of the previous year; the scale of cellular IoT end users is rapidly approaching that of mobile phone users, and the difference between the two has narrowed to 140 million households, accounting for 47.7% of the number of mobile network terminal connections (including mobile phone users and cellular IoT terminals). The total number of IPTV (network television) subscribers reached 360 million, a net increase of 11.21 million over the end of the previous year.

Telecom service usage
Mobile Internet traffic grew faster, with a record high in March. In the first quarter, the cumulative access traffic of mobile Internet reached 58.7 billion GB, an increase of 21.8% year-on-year. As of the end of March, the number of mobile Internet users reached 1.44 billion, a net increase of 19.85 million from the end of the previous year. In March, the average household mobile Internet access traffic (DOU) reached 14.98GB/month, an increase of 17.6% year-on-year, and 0.26GB/household/month higher than the end of the previous year.

The volume of mobile phone calls grew at a low rate, and the volume of mobile SMS services increased equally. In the first quarter, mobile phone call-to-call calls reached 544.5 billion minutes, an increase of 1.4% year-on-year; fixed-line call time reached 19.7 billion minutes, down 12.8% year-on-year. In the first quarter, the national mobile SMS service volume increased by 3.6% year-on-year, and the mobile SMS service revenue increased by 3.1% year-on-year.

Communication capability
The total length of fiber optic cable lines continues to increase. As of the end of March, the total length of optical cable lines nationwide reached 55.99 million kilometers, a net increase of 1.11 million kilometers over the end of the previous year. Among them, the proportion of access network optical cables, local network relay optical cables and long-distance optical cable lines was 65.1%, 32.8% and 2.1% respectively, and the proportion of access network optical cables increased by 2.5 percentage points year-on-year.
Broadband network construction is accelerated. As of the end of March, the number of Internet broadband access ports nationwide reached 1.03 billion, a net increase of 9.79 million over the end of the previous year. Among them, the number of optical fiber access (FTTH/O) ports reached 970 million, a net increase of 13.84 million over the end of the previous year, accounting for 94.8% from 94.3% at the end of the previous year. As of the end of March, the number of 10G PON ports with Gigabit network service capabilities reached 9.05 million, a net increase of 1.19 million from the end of the previous year.

The construction of 5G base stations is steadily advancing. As of the end of March, the total number of mobile phone base stations in the mainland reached 10.04 million, a net increase of 81,000 from the end of the previous year. Among them, the total number of 5G base stations reached 1.559 million, accounting for 15.5% of the total number of mobile base stations, accounting for an increase of 1.2 percentage points compared with the end of the previous year. Among them, 134,000 new 5G base stations were built in the first quarter.

Regional developments
The penetration rate of users with more than 100 megabytes in the central region is slightly leading. As of the end of March, the penetration rate of fixed broadband access users with 100Mbps and above in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions was 93%, 94.2%, 92.9% and 93.4% respectively, and the central region accounted for a leading proportion of the country. The number of broadband access users with access rates of 1,000Mbps and above in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions reached 24.95 million, 8.99 million, 11.27 million and 750,000 respectively, of which Jiangsu, Guangdong and Shandong provinces were in the forefront.

The eastern region leads the way in 5G construction and user penetration. As of the end of March, the number of 5G base stations in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions reached 752,000, 330,000, 377,000 and 101,000 respectively, accounting for 17.3%, 15.1%, 13.3% and 14.7% of the total number of mobile phone base stations in the region, respectively, of which Guangdong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces were in the forefront. The number of 5G mobile phone users in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions reached 181.84 million, 93.35 million, 101.93 million and 25.84 million respectively, accounting for 25.2%, 24.3%, 23.3% and 22% of the total number of mobile phone users in the region, respectively, of which Guangdong, Jiangsu and Henan provinces were in the forefront.
The eastern region leads the growth rate of mobile Internet access traffic. In the first quarter, mobile Internet access traffic in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions reached 25.3 billion GB, 13.1 billion GB, 17.3 billion GB and 3.02 billion GB respectively, an increase of 24.1%, 22.3%, 19.3% and 14.9% year-on-year, and the growth rate of the eastern region led the country. The average monthly mobile Internet access (DOU) per household in Tibet, Qinghai and Yunnan provinces exceeded 20 GB/household month; the difference between the highest and lowest DOU values in each province was 12.8 GB/household per month.
