Work and life
| Wang Xiaobo
I firmly believe that the world that everyone sees should not be the world in front of them. The world in front of us is nothing more than eating, drinking, and sleeping, is this enough?
I always thought that with Hugo's fraternity, Shaw's wisdom, and Romain Rolland's clarity of what beauty was, man should no longer be ignorant. Meaty things should not be praised under any circumstances. People without a little deep wisdom can't do it anyway.
I know that in China, rural people see childbearing as a lifelong theme. Raising children, dying themselves, and giving them a place to make room is a popular idea. In the city there is another idea, but I don't know if it is very popular: it regards the acquisition of social status as a lifelong theme. Standing in front of the ashes wall of Beijing's Babaoshan Mountain, you can feel this thought.
There I saw the tomb of a deceased uncle with the words: Deputy Department Head, Deputy Branch Secretary, Associate Professor, Deputy Director of So-and-So Teaching and Research Office, and so on. If you can remove these "vice" words, of course, it is better for this uncle, but these "vice" words can best prove that there is such an idea.
By the way, I went to the cemeteries in the United States and found that there were only two things written on their tombstones: one was the date of birth and death, and the other was military service in a certain year; that is, they thought that there were only two things worth remembering in a person's life: this god's people had come to earth, and this citizen had gone to serve the country, and it was superfluous to write anything else, which I think is more simple... I am afraid that it is too sad to write about these tomb scenes in a youth journal, or to return to the main topic as soon as possible.
I would like to recommend my views on life to my young friends: people can have fun from work, which is a huge benefit.
In my experience, one of the biggest headaches when people are young is deciding what they want to do in this life. In this regard, I don't have any specific advice: you can do anything, but it is best not to write novels, which is to compete with me. Of course, if you insist on writing, I have no reason to object. In short, it is good to do anything; but to make a show, this is where the value and dignity of the human person lies. When people work, they must not only use their hands, legs and waist, but also use their brains and their own hearts. I always feel that the Chinese people do not pay enough attention to this latter aspect, so that they will see the work as a sin. Losing the main source of happiness, the attitude towards life will also become gray...
Man lives in the world not only with a body, but also a mind and a mind – please do not understand this anatomically. What kind of thing the human brain is, science can not yet say clearly. It is even more difficult to say what is going on in the heart. For myself, being open-minded is the lowest goal I want to achieve in my life. If something goes against my heart, I think it is not worth doing; if someone goes against my heart, I feel that he is not worth having a friendship; if a certain life is against my heart, I will think that it is not worth living.
Mr. Russell once said that for people, an unchecked life is really not worth living. I agree with him that a life without censorship is one of the unacceptable kinds of life. Man must live a life that he can accept, and this is precisely what motivates him to change everything. When people have a heart, they can use it to change their lives.
Chinese like to accept the idea that as long as you can live, it is good, and it doesn't matter what kind of life you live. It can be seen from the names of some movies: "Alive", "Finding Fun"... I categorically disagree with this idea, because those who hold it can live in any bad way and thus render life itself meaningless.
A noble, clean, fun-filled life is good, and it's easy to get a consensus. A humble, dirty, poor life is not good, and this can also be agreed upon. But these two are not enough.
I make a living writing, and I know that certain articles are good and I know that certain articles are bad. Just knowing these two is not enough to start writing. And there is a more important one, that is, an article of a certain kind is not advisable to me, and it must not be written out of my pen and published in the press under my name. To use a small metaphor, this is also my attitude towards life.
