"The Century-old Master Who Entered New China - Cao Yu"

Preface to Cao Yu on Creation (Excerpt)

Text | Cao Yu

When I woke up in the morning, I paced to the balcony to have a look. The faint misty clouds revealed the pure shadow of the full moon in the west, as if they knew that they were about to disappear, and the dark clouds in the east covered the sun that was about to break through everything, and at this time, it shone with a golden light like a sword.

In the open space opposite, a new building was being built, and the hacksaw began to make a harsh sound, and the little autumn insect chirping that could still be heard was also frightened to stop making noise. The workers banged on something, and the sound was heard far away, and the steel frames of the buildings rose like this. Farther away is the new building complex standing, yesterday it was the gray of the cement itself, today it has turned a verdant green, which is particularly beautiful in the morning light. Workers are creating, for people who are running in the torrent of bicycles, for people standing on the side of the road waiting for the bus, for the people in the subway cars, they are rushing to work, to build, to work.

What am I doing? Thoughts?

Back at the square table, turn on the bright light, the light in the room is not enough, the old eyes have fainted. I'm going to write a preface, at the urging of the editor. He compiled a book that I talked about literary and artistic creation, which has already been published.

I've forgotten how I used to write about how to create. In front of him sat a man who was struggling with thought, his eyebrows locked, facing a mess of manuscript paper. It was around the many days and nights of this bitterness, stuffiness, tension, and excitement that those words were squeezed out to express what an author wanted to say.

I've also talked about the problem of creation, and I've talked a lot of nonsense, because I lack systematic theoretical research, which is nothing to do.

I like to write about people, I love people, I write about the pleasing characters that I think are heroes; I hate people, I write about humble, trivial villains. I feel how much people need to understand, and how difficult it is to understand. No literary scholar dared to say this: "I have made people clear." ”

But I like to read Gorky's essay on "Man.". He said:

"O man! It was as if a sun had risen in my chest, and people were calmly striding forward in the dazzling sunshine! Keep up! What a tragically perfect man! ”

As I read this aloud, I saw how "man" stood up in the heart of a great writer.

"He has the power of thought, which is sometimes as fast as lightning, sometimes as quiet as a sword—a free and proud man, far ahead of all, high above life, alone in the mystery of life, alone in the midst of innumerable errors

"As soon as he advanced, he poured his heart and soul into his difficult, lonely and heroic journey."

This is the power of "man", he is the essence of all things. And it is precisely because of the thoughts that "man" is praised, created, and composed.

I don't want to say I don't have thoughts, but what I think is always pervaded by the complex activities of the people in the play. Maybe that's how to write.

I don't want to talk much about it, and these articles are often forced out of forced words. Suffice it to say that let us write about people well, so that we naturally reflect all aspects of society, the process of history and culture from generation to generation.

I don't want to admit what kind of writer I am, let alone a theorist, I just want to write something useful to mankind in my short life. How painful I am when I can't write or can't write.

My legs and feet have not been very flexible in the past two years, in fact, I am only seventy-five years old, I can no longer do without a cane, I have seen many old people over ninety years old, or spirited, walking peacefully. But I felt that I was like a leaf on an old tree in the autumn twilight, blown down, dried up, and returned to the earth when the autumn wind was gusting. I sometimes think that life is tied to only one hair.

But I still want to write. The good and honest brave man that makes me rejoice, I want to write. Despicable and vicious, obscene people, I hate deeply, I want to write. I wish my pen could go on like this.
