In January 2022, the bus market continued the decline of the previous year, and only one segment of the large passenger market achieved growth. How did the bus market perform in February? And what segments can harvest growth?

The first commercial vehicle network was recently informed that according to the data of the China Automobile Association (the caliber of the number of invoices issued by enterprises, the caliber of non-terminal sales, the same below), in February 2022, the domestic bus (including chassis) market production and sales of 24,700 vehicles and 23,300 vehicles, down 17% and 24% month-on-month, down 5% and 4% year-on-year, production and sales continued to decline, but the decline was narrowed compared with the previous month. By model, large, medium and light buses sold 1,888, 1,661 and 19,800 units in February, accounting for 8.10%, 7.13% and 84.77% of the bus market share in February, respectively.

Compared with the same period in 2021, the share of large buses in the bus market in January and February this year expanded by 1.99%, the share of medium-sized bus market decreased by 0.16%, and the share of light buses in the bus market fell by 2.15 percentage points.

Looking at the sales volume and growth trend of the bus market in February in the past 5 years, it can be seen that the bus market has come out of a downward-increasing-decreasing-increasing-decreasing-decreasing trend in February of the past 5 years, and the bottom is in 2020, when the bus market sales in February of that year were less than 10,000 vehicles, and only 0.79 million vehicles were sold due to the epidemic; the high level of the bus market in February of the past 5 years was in February 2021, with sales of 24,200 vehicles. The bus market of 23,300 units in February was the second lowest in five years, selling about 900 fewer units than in February last year. In terms of cumulative sales, the cumulative sales of 53,800 vehicles in the first two months of this year have been at a moderate level in the past five years, about 6,600 vehicles less than the five-year high in the first two months of 2021.

In February 2022, the bus market as a whole declined, but the decline is not the only melody of the bus market, and the performance of each market segment is different.

Sales of large buses

In February 2022, the sales of large buses (including chassis) were 1888 units, down 30% month-on-month and 26% year-on-year, and the large passenger market continued to grow in February after achieving a positive turn in January, and the growth rate was expanded compared with the previous month (the large passenger market in January increased by 10% year-on-year). In February, the top 5 companies in terms of sales of large buses (including chassis) were Yutong Bus, Foton Automobile, Zhongtong Bus, Xiamen Jinlong and Suzhou Jinlong, with a total of 1276 sales of 1276 vehicles, accounting for 67.58% of the total sales of large buses (including chassis) in February.

As can be seen from the above table, compared with the previous month, the top 5 companies in the sales of large buses (including chassis) all declined; compared with the same period in 2021, all the top five companies in terms of sales achieved growth, of which Yutong, Futian, Zhongtong and Xiamen Golden Dragon all reached double digits, respectively, 13%, 4150%, 95% and 65%, and Suzhou Golden Dragon, which ranked fifth, increased by 4% year-on-year in February this year. In February 2022, none of the companies in the large customer market achieved positive growth month-on-month and year-on-year.

Sales of medium-sized buses

In February 2022, 1,661 medium-sized buses (including chassis) were sold, down 37% month-on-month and 5% year-on-year, and the growth rate was positive from the previous month (16% year-on-year decline in January). In February, the top six companies in terms of sales of medium-sized buses (including chassis) were: Dongfeng Company, Yutong Bus, Foton Motor, FAW Toyota, CRRC Electric and BYD (CRRC and BYD tied for 5th), with a total sales of 1197 vehicles, accounting for 72.07% of the total sales of medium-sized buses (including chassis) in February.

As can be seen from the above table, compared with the previous month, the sales volume of medium-sized buses (including chassis) increased by 3 and fell by 3, and Dongfeng, Foton and BYD performed better than in January; compared with the same period in 2021, the top six companies in sales also increased by 5 and 1, and the five companies of Dongfeng, Foton, FAW Toyota, CRRC Electric and BYD achieved growth, with an increase of 241%, 100%, 11%, 133% and 204% respectively. In February 2022, the top five companies in the medium-sized bus market, Zhongdong, Foton and BYD, achieved double positive growth month-on-month and year-on-year, while Yutong suffered a double decline from the previous month and year-on-year.

Sales of light buses

In February 2022, the sales of light buses (including chassis) were 19,800 units, down 21% month-on-month and 6% year-on-year, and the decline rate was 12 percentage points narrower than that of the previous month (18% year-on-year sales in January), and the continuous decline momentum of the light passenger market expanded to "6 consecutive declines". In February, the top 5 companies in terms of sales of light buses (including chassis) were: Jiangling Motors, SAIC Maxus, Chongqing Changan, Foton Motor and Nanjing Iveco. The five companies sold a total of 16,300 units, accounting for 82.61% of the total sales of light buses (including chassis) in February.

As can be seen in the above table, compared with the previous month, the top five companies in sales increased by 2 and fell by 3%, and Jiangling Motors and Foton Motor achieved growth of 20% and 32% respectively; compared with the same period in 2021, the top five companies in sales increased by 2 and 3 fell, and the growth was achieved by SAIC Maxus and Foton Motor, and the sales volume in February increased by 24% and 29% respectively year-on-year. In February 2022, among the top five companies in light bus sales, Foton Automobile achieved double positive growth month-on-month and year-on-year, while Chongqing Changan and Nanjing Iveco suffered a double decline from the same period last month and year-on-year.
