She used music as a "key" and sang "Little Stars" to teach special children to learn to speak

Yangtze River Daily Wuhan client March 8 news (reporter Wang Chunlan correspondent Wang Chen) "a flash of light, the sky is full of small stars..." "This is the picture of the stars." After learning to sing for a year, the autistic child who did not speak originally learned to sing not only learned the whole children's song, but also grabbed slippers with the "teacher", and the mother was so excited that she almost cried.

"Use the 'key' of music to open the 'heart lock' of children with autism, let them go out of their own world, and share our joy." Wang Lu, a rehabilitation engineer in the Department of Child Health Care of Wuhan Children's Hospital, said that the combination of music rehabilitation and cognitive rehabilitation, two-pronged training of special children, can improve their abilities in all aspects as much as possible and adapt to society as soon as possible.

Teach to sing "Little Star" and accompany the boy to "get out of loneliness"

Ms. Xu of Wuchang has twin sons, who still do not speak when they are two years old, do not look at their parents when they play, and let them hold the hands of adults when they go out, and the children always can't hold back.

At the beginning of 2021, Ms. Xu took her child to the Children's Health Department of Wuhan Children's Hospital for medical treatment, and was diagnosed with autism tendencies, and Dabao's condition was more serious and needed early intervention, otherwise she would only live in her own world. Since then, both children have undergone rehabilitation training at Wuhan Children's Hospital.

"When Dabao first came to class, he showed him drums, pianos, castanets and other instruments, and he sat quietly on the side, not interested at all." Wang Lu recalled that while playing the piano, she imitated various sounds while carefully observing the children. Finally, a string of bass melodies and a sound that mimics the "whining" of the train whistle attracted Dabao to glance at it.

"The child responds to this stimulus!" Wang Lu continued to play the melody and make a "whining" sound, finally getting Dabao's attention; then, she took Dabao's hand and asked him to try to play the piano and imitate the train whistle together. In this way, through several months of music lessons, Dabao became interested in the piano and was able to associate train pictures with the sound of flutes. Wang Lu began to teach him to sing "Little Stars" again, teaching him to associate the song with the pictures of the stars.

After systematic cognitive rehabilitation and music rehabilitation, this year, the 4-year-old Dabao can sing "Little Star" in its entirety. He also learned to call Mom and Dad. In the first class after the Spring Festival, before entering the classroom, he had to change into slippers, and Dabao insisted on grabbing to wear Wang Lu's pink slippers, and the two frolicked for a while. The mother, Ms. Xu, blushed at the side: the child finally stepped out of his own world and began to communicate with the people around him.

Use music as a "key" to connect the child and the world

Wang Lu graduated from Wuhan Conservatory of Music with a major in music education, and later studied music therapy at Hansei University in South Korea. During her time in school, she often followed her teachers to hospital wards, special schools, welfare homes and other places to practice, using music to perform "psychological massage" for patients and the elderly.

It was also at a hospital that a small solo concert made her decide to work in music rehabilitation.

"The girls who give concerts suffer from both autism and ADHD, often ignore people, and can't help but dance. But through music rehabilitation, she was able to quietly play the piano and sing on stage. Her mother was crying silently and excitedly offstage. Wang Lu said that she realized that music is a "key" to open the "heart lock" of special children, connecting them with the world around them.

When working in the Children's Health Department of Wuhan Children's Hospital, Wang Lu also saw the "magic" of music rehabilitation treatment many times: through learning to sing children's songs, some children spoke, some children's body movements became coordinated, and some children showed their musical expertise and won awards in art competitions.

"Children with autism have impaired left brain cognition, and learning to speak is very difficult for them, but their right brain has the function of controlling the melody, and through music 'resonance', children can learn to sing in music, thereby cultivating language expression." Wang Lu said that using music as a therapeutic medium can also help children with autism, cerebral palsy and developmental delay to improve limb balance, cognitive coordination and language communication.

Early intervention, "combination punch" treatment effect is better

According to the data, there are about 2 million autistic children under the age of 12 in China, growing at a rate of nearly 200,000 per year. Autism, also known as autism disorder, autism, etc., is a representative disease of extensive developmental disorders. If early detection, early recognition, early intervention, through targeted behavior correction, special education, can maximize the child's social skills, language function, cognitive level and social adaptability.

In addition to music rehabilitation, Wang Lu's colleague and rehabilitationist Yan Pei is mainly responsible for cognitive rehabilitation for children, through corresponding rehabilitation training, so that children can understand the instructions as much as possible, obey the instructions, and enhance their self-care ability in life. Cognitive rehabilitation and music rehabilitation go hand in hand, and the children have made significant progress.

Yan Pei reminded parents that if they find that their children have language communication disorders, often avoid eye contact, lack of interest in people's voices, are unwilling to be close to people, and have a stereotyped and single interest in a toy or something, they should pay attention to it, go to the hospital for examination and exclusion, and start intervening as soon as possible.
