Artificial intelligence has a characteristic, that is, once a technology is realized, it will immediately be considered not to be intelligent. So, "true artificial intelligence" is always ahead, like a carrot hanging in front of us. Yann Le Cun, a 2018 Turing Award winner and founder of deep learning, gave several examples in his autobiography The Road to Science.

In the 1950s, translating mathematical formulas into instructions that could be executed by computers belonged to artificial intelligence. But now students will recognize, isn't this just a compiler? Now all computer science students learn this knowledge, so no one thinks it belongs to artificial intelligence.

Another example is path search, which in the 1960s clearly belonged to artificial intelligence. But today, it's one of the most commonly used features in everyday life. For example, the Dijkstra algorithm of 1959 and the A* algorithm of Hart, Nilsson, and Raphael in 1969 can both enable people to find the shortest path. Path search has been applied to systems like GPS and is no longer a technological pioneer.

This reminds me of my experience of doing quantum computing science. Before 2020, there were many articles exaggerating quantum computing to omnipotence, and I had to come out often to explain that quantum computing only has advantages over certain problems, not all of them. In December 2020, China's quantum computer "Nine Chapters" brushed the screen. Overnight, a whole bunch of people came out saying that quantum computing is a hoax because it can only do one thing, and the others can't even add, subtract, multiply, and divide! I had to come out again and explain that quantum computing could surpass existing computers in one thing, and it didn't need to do everything at all.

If you think about it, the psychology of many people is like this: thinking too well about what has not been realized, ignoring its value for what has already been realized. In fact, not only for science and technology, for feelings, for life, but also for politics, for war, many people don't have such a problem?
