The second-generation Tesla Roadster has been in service for several years, as the delay means it won't arrive until sometime in 2023. It should be a machine with excellent performance.
Taking inspiration from the original Roadster that helped Tesla come into the spotlight in 2008, the new supercar promises staggering performance figures. 0-60 mph time is 1.9 seconds, 0-100 time is 4.2 seconds, top speed is more than 250 mph, and the range can reach 620 miles.
Tesla's Roadster 2022 follows the launch of the 1,000-horsepower Tesla Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid sedans launched in the middle of last year, and the updated car offers better performance thanks to the new three-motor electric unit based on the Plaid powertrain.
Tesla Sports Car 2022: Release Window and Pricing
Unsurprisingly, the Tesla Sports car, scheduled for release in 2022, has been delayed several times. But due to supply chain shortages, production won't start until 2023. Elon Musk initially made the announcement in September and confirmed the situation at Tesla's annual shareholder meeting.
This can be a blow for those who have already paid a $50,000 deposit to book a basic $200,000 car. Tesla plans to launch the Founders Series model, which will only produce 1,000 units and cost $250,000; that's serious supercar money.
Tesla Sports Car 2022: Endurance Potential, Battery and Performance
The Tesla Roadster 2022 will come with a 200kWh battery pack that, according to the U.S. manufacturer, has the potential to offer a range of about 620 miles. This is the ridiculous range that is absolutely unheard of in electric vehicles.
Even Tesla's other industry-leading cars can't match it. The next best option is the three-motor Tesla Cybertruck, which promises more than 500 miles, and the Model S, which offers 405 miles.
However, anyone who takes advantage of the car's powerful performance potential is unlikely to get anything close to that. The power unit will drive three electric motors – one in front and two at the rear – which will provide 10,000 Nm / 7,400 lb ft of torque and enable it to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds.
Slightly better than the Model S Plaid, it's no surprise given the Roadster's lower, sportier body shape. Tesla claims that the all-wheel-drive sports car will also be able to reach 0-100 mph in 4.2 seconds and travel a quarter of a mile in 8.8 seconds. The top speed is expected to exceed 250 miles per hour.
Compared to more standard models in the Tesla series, the lattice three-motor powertrain model has a clear advantage, as "standard" cars are only equipped with dual motors – one in the front and the other in the rear.
Tesla Sports Car 2022: Design and Interior
The Tesla Roadster 2022 looks like every inch is a supercar, and the graceful lines clearly show what the 2+2 sport model should be able to offer.
The second-generation Roadster debuted in 2017 and was initially expected to begin production in 2021, but with similar delays to the Model 3 sedan. However, the overall appearance of the design has not changed much in the last three years or so.
Despite having supercar status, the Interior of the Tesla Roadster will come with four seats. Although, by design, the space for rear passengers looks comfortable at best. Especially because of that significantly sloping roof line.
However, thanks to the detachable glass roof section, the car may feel more spacious. It sits above the front seats and can be removed and stored in the trunk. In keeping with the interior, the concept indicates that there is a large touchscreen that covers the area from the top of the dashboard to the center console.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously hinted that a range of trim options will be available in addition to the options in the base model specifications. Musk also hinted in his colorful Twitter timeline in a typically exaggerated way that there would be a SpaceX kit with a "rocket thruster," which could bring extra changes to the powerful design suite.
Tesla Sports Car 2022: Special Features
Any new Tesla model always comes with a lot of technology, and the Tesla Roadster 2022 looks like no exception. In addition to these rocket thrusters, the sports car will be equipped with the company's latest Autopilot driving technology, a large number of surround cameras, 360-degree visibility from 250 meters away and a set of ultrasonic sensors.
More than a dozen such sensors will be able to detect hard and soft objects, while the car's forward radar could continue to function in a range of adverse conditions. This includes heavy rain, fog and dust.
Tesla's Roadster will most likely also have over-the-air software update capabilities, allowing for dynamic update performance, autonomous features, and numerous security systems. Just as you would expect from a manufacturer.
Tesla Roadster 2022: Outlook
It's been a long time, but the second-generation Tesla Sports car is getting closer and closer to emerging from the company's U.S. headquarters in California — even as it currently gets into an impasse over other production conundrums at the Fremont manufacturing plant.
Good things take time, and given that the car was developed from scratch, it's no surprise that unlike the original Tesla Roadster based on the Lotus chassis, the continued delay in its development is no surprise. But while the compelling power and performance data is impressive, that's about it for now. Time will tell if the car can live up to the hype.
