"Can't stop" controversy into history! New cars will be mandatory to install EDR: Tesla has sued owners for this

From this year onwards, new vehicles that meet the requirements will be mandatorily installed with EDR traffic event recorder equipment. This means that future situations involving the "Rashomon" incident of smart cars can be confirmed by black box data, and the frequent "unstoppable" controversies similar to Tesla will also become history.

At the end of last year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a newly revised "Technical Conditions for the Safety of Motor Vehicle Operation", which requires that from January 1, 2022, newly produced passenger cars must be equipped with EDR systems, that is, driving event recorders.

Vehicle EDR, full name Event Data Recorder, commonly known as "black box" or "collision recorder", the device is similar to the aircraft's data logger, can record the key data of vehicle operation before and after the accident, such as speed, pedal data, ABS status and airbag status and so on.

At present, the configuration of EDR in some overseas markets has been relatively mature, and some countries have been mandatorily installed. Previously, the proportion of new domestic cars equipped with EDR equipment was not high, and only some luxury brands or intelligent new energy vehicles were installed.

Through EDR data to restore the state of the vehicle at the time of the incident, the more typical case is the Tesla accident that occurred in Wenzhou in August 2020.

At the time of the incident, the Tesla driven by Mr. Chen rushed into the parking lot of a small area in Wenzhou, causing damage to many cars and seriously injuring himself. As for the cause of the accident, Mr. Chen said that the vehicle automatically accelerated and the braking did not respond.

After the incident, the Wenzhou Society of Automotive Engineering was commissioned to test the Tesla involved and provided an accident report through EDR and background data detection. Multiple sets of data show that at the time of the accident, the driver continued to press the accelerator pedal and did not press the brake pedal.

However, Tesla owner Mr. Chen did not approve of the report, and said in public that "Tesla brake failure" and "Tesla automatic acceleration" and other remarks.

Tesla later used EDR data and test reports as the main evidence to sue the owner for violating his right to reputation through false statements. The court ruled in the first instance that the owner publicly apologized and compensated Tesla for 50,000 yuan in losses.
