Ski jumping, athletes use skis (double boards) as a tool, along the artificial jumping platform, take off at the starting point, the body jumps into the air "fly", landing in the landing area. The speed of the taxi, the timing and direction of the jump and the psychological quality of the players are the main factors that determine the performance of the competition. Athlete equipment includes snowboards, snowshoes, fixtures that connect snowshoes and snowboards, jumpsuits, helmets, gloves, goggles, etc.

The ski jumping competition venue is mainly composed of a ski gate, a starting platform, a landslide assistance, a jumping point, a standard point (K point), a landing slope and a referee platform. There are two kinds of jumping platforms: standard platforms and large jumping platforms, the standard platform K point is 95 meters, and the large jumping platform K point is 125 meters. The K-point is the scoring origin of an athlete's distance score. Athletes land, more than the landing zone K points plus points, less than K points deduct points. The score of each jump of the athlete is composed of the departure goal score, the distance score, the flight attitude score, and the wind compensation score. Skidding, jumping and landing are key parts of the race.

In addition to the ski jump, there are also snowboard jumps and freestyle ski jumps. Although they are all called "big jump platforms", the three have their own characteristics, and the differences are mainly in terms of athlete equipment, scoring rules, and competition venues.

Athletes are equipped differently: in ski jumping and freestyle ski jumping competitions, athletes wear skis; in snowboard jumping competitions, athletes wear snowboards.

The scoring rules are different: ski jumping is scored according to the athlete's flight distance and flight attitude; snowboard jumping and freestyle ski jumping mainly consider athletes performing flips, swings, grabs and other actions in the air.

The venues are different: the Beijing Winter Olympic Ski Jumping Competition is held at the National Ski Jumping Center; the snowboard jump and the freestyle ski jump are both held at the Shougang Ski Jump.

There are 5 sub-events of ski jumping at the Beijing Winter Olympics, which are divided into men's individual standard platform, individual big jumping platform and group; women's individual standard platform; mixed team. The design of the National Ski Jumping Center "Snow Ruyi" is inspired by the traditional Chinese ornament "Ruyi", which integrates the S-shaped curve of the platform section into the shape of "Ruyi", realizing the perfect integration of traditional Chinese culture and the construction of Winter Olympic venues. The two tracks of "Snow Ruyi" are the big jump platform and the standard platform, and at the top of the track, there is an area with a ring diameter of about 80 meters and a total height of about 40 meters, which can be used for public sightseeing after the race.
