Demystifying the National Ski Jumping Center "Snow Ruyi": How to provide athletes with the ultimate competition experience during the race? How will it be used for a long time after the game?

author:CNR

Beijing, February 24 (Central Broadcasting Network Reporter Han Xueying, Bai Jiege, Meng Xiaoguang) In the just-concluded Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, the National Ski Jumping Center - "Snow Ruyi" is one of the most recognizable venues. Because its jumping platform section fits the S-shaped curve of the traditional Chinese mascot "Ruyi", it is figuratively called "Snow Ruyi".

Located in the ancient poplar tree complex in Chongli District, Zhangjiakou City, "Snow Ruyi", which undertook the ski jumping and Nordic competitions at the Winter Olympic Games, is the first ski jumping venue in the mainland, the largest engineering and technically difficult competition venue in Zhangjiakou Area, and the largest ski jumping venue in the world today. How does the "Snow Ruyi" during the competition provide the ultimate competitive experience for athletes from all over the world? After the game, how will it achieve long-term utilization?

The National Ski Jumping Center takes full account of the scene and experience of athletes competing in the planning and design stage. Wang Jingxian, deputy director of the second division of venue construction of the Planning and Construction Department of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee and facility manager of the ancient poplar stadium group, introduced: "The location of the National Ski Jumping Center has been adjusted many times by us, and finally selected a valley environment with a long trail towards the 'biathlon', the athletes will face a very broad view in the whole process of the competition, especially during the evening to night competition, on the distant mountain, there is a landmark building - the Great Wall for night lighting treatment, and the athletes' gliding feeling is very good." We also use some technical, equipment and facilities, such as the blessing of the wind net, coupled with the advantages of site selection, so that the venue has not been postponed or rescheduled due to high winds during the entire Winter Olympic Games. ”

Thanks to the international top construction standards, the meticulous commissioning of the preparatory stage and the meticulous maintenance of the competition stage, the National Ski Jumping Center has realized the commitment of "Ruyi". Wang Jingxian said: "During the entire Winter Olympic Games, there was not a single case of the National Ski Jumping Center affecting the progress of the competition due to the failure of equipment and facilities, and there was not a single incident of injury to a person, including athletes during the competition, nor any complaints from athletes or sports teams. ”

Wang Jingxian feels that the happy selfie posted by athletes from all over the world and "Xue Ruyi" on social media is the biggest compliment for the construction and operation of the venue, which coincides with Zhang Li, chief designer of the National Ski Jumping Center and dean of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University. Zhang Li said: "Whether the building is good or not, it is not the architect who decides, nor the image that decides, the image cognition is part, but more is the real user's experience in the process of his life that the space cares for him and the improvement of his quality of life, which is like this for the athlete." So we often mention 'human causes' now, and look at this building in reverse from a human point of view. ”

If ski jumping is a classic extreme sport, then we might call these athletes "supermen". Zhang Li repeatedly thought when designing that "human factors" can not only consider the "superman" of training and competition, but also consider ordinary people. Zhang Li said: "Judging from the past five or six Winter Olympics, ski jumping venues are notoriously poor post-race use, and such venues cannot be approached by normal people. We have to copy the way ordinary people use it, 'roaming' or 'sharing', onto 'Snow Ruyi'. On the middle side of 'Ruyi', except for the windproof, we did a thing that the International Snow Federation had never done before, and made 4 steps about 75 cm wide, and people could always walk along the slide. ”

How can the National Ski Jumping Center be used for a long time? "Snow Ruyi" in the design is different from the conventional platform venue only pay attention to the construction of the competition area, it is composed of the summit club, the competition area (starting area, slide area), the grandstand three parts, corresponding to the "Ruyi" handle head, handle body, handle tail. Zhang Li introduced: "Later, we formed a few things in our minds that must be done - we must let people stick to the slide, because once we stick to it, see all these details, people feel that this venue does not have such a big sense of distance from me; it must be that people have a particularly good activity space on it, and they can tell stories in the future; there must be a standard stadium at the bottom that can do a variety of activities aside from the jumping game." You want people to be able to continue, so that the memory of the Winter Olympics finally becomes a motivation to use these things and bring people together here, not a distant story. ”

Zhang Li told reporters that when he discussed the design of "Snow Ruyi" with officials of the International Snow Federation, there were often times when the other party was surprised. Wang Jingxian also had the experience of disagreeing with the International Snow Federation. Wang Jingxian said: "In the early stage of venue planning, we had the attitude of being responsible for the venue and did not want the venue to take only 16 days. The design of the underground rail cable car was also controversial with the International Snow Federation at that time, because from the perspective of the competition, they preferred to make a 'hanging rail' type cable car, sitting on a small chair, looping up the mountain mode, this cable car is very beneficial for the competition, but for the sustainable use of the post-race heritage is a big flaw, because many older people or children, even disabled people in wheelchairs, if you take the 'hanging rail' type cable car, there will be a lot of inconvenience. After a lot of consultation and communication with the competition team, we finally chose the elevator with car-style cable car form, which greatly improved the convenience of post-race use. ”

After the Beijing Winter Olympics, the national ski jumping center's competition mission has come to an end for the time being. From design planning to construction and construction, from bringing more ordinary people into the scope of users of the venue to reaching a consensus in disagreements with the International Snow Federation, from space to detail, the "snow ruyi" lying quietly between the valleys is destined to be more than just a momentary dazzling. Liu Xinghua, director of the Heritage Management Department of the Overall Planning Department of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, said: "Not only is it 'Snow Ruyi', in fact, all the competition venues have formulated heritage plans before the games, from the holding of sports events, national fitness after the games to commercial operations and cultural activities, forming a systematic and advanced planning." All venues are working hard in these aspects: one is that the competition venues are all open to the public after the game, for the 'snow ruyi', during the snow season, some ski jumping performances are held, some public experience activities are carried out, the non-snow season carries out climbing stairs, ropeway projects, and the track is more buffered to set up as 'grass sliding'; the grandstand area is suitable for outdoor football, tennis, badminton, and mass activities can be carried out. The second is that high-level sports venues still have to hold international high-level sports events after the game, such as the National Ski Jumping Center, which must continue to bid for and host the Ski Jumping World Cup, championships, etc., and also provide a training base for the national team, including some youth echelons. ”

As a venue for ice and snow sports, can "Snow Ruyi" adapt to the operation of the four seasons? Liu Xinghua revealed: "'Snow Ruyi' is actually planning multi-format operation to achieve the four-season operation of the venue. For example, the Summit Club, which has 4100 square meters of indoor space, is actively cooperating with the e-sports industry, planning some high-end conferences and exhibitions after the game, and also plans to build the Winter Olympic Museum of the venue itself and open some AR/VR experience halls; the end area is the grandstand, the middle field is as large as the standard football field, and there are thousands of grandstand seats on both sides, which can carry out some cultural, tourism, leisure, commercial activities, including concerts, concerts, youth summer camps, etc., which is a full-time and all-season tourist resort. ”

Liu Xinghua explained that as a legacy of the Beijing Winter Olympics, the long-term utilization of "Snow Ruyi" is not isolated, but promotes each other with regional development, and is highly integrated with supporting sports facilities and cultural resources. Liu Xinghua said: "Zhangjiakou Chongli District is driven by the Olympic Games, the construction of a large number of ice and snow sports facilities, combined with rich natural and humanistic tourism resources, with the help of the Winter Olympics to create 'all-Asia ice and snow tourism mountain resort destination', Zhangjiakou ancient poplar area was also named 'Zhangjiakou Chongli Olympic Park' after the game, the Olympic intangible brand assets, from the perspective of the sports industry, in fact, also to promote the coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, in the transportation infrastructure, ecological environment joint prevention and joint governance, ice and snow industry win-win development." 2. Mutual promotion and complementarity of public services will have a great role in improving, so as to achieve the comprehensive utilization and lasting utilization of venues. ”
