This year's Spring Festival holiday, due to various force majeure reasons, did not choose to go home, but came to Hainan, the southernmost province of China's territory, for a different Spring Festival experience.
Since Hainan is in a unique geographical location, plus I, as a person who likes to drive, it is naturally impossible not to take a self-driving tour around the island. So I rented a car from Haikou and officially set off.
The above dialogue occurred after the end of this journey to experience the Hainan self-driving tour, when chatting with the driver master while taking a taxi in Haikou. His answer, while funny, does reflect some phenomena.

This trip to Hainan chose a fuel vehicle, but along the roundabout highway all the way down, it was found that the number of pure electric vehicles on Hainan Island was very high.

Although I have heard about the motor vehicle purchase restriction policy here before coming to Hainan (at present, buying fuel vehicles in Hainan requires lottery or bidding to obtain indicators, while the indicators of new energy vehicles can be obtained only through application), but the visibility of pure electric vehicles on the road is still quite surprising.
Through a few days of observation, it was found that the pure electric vehicle model here not only appears in the field of taxis or online car-hailing, and many consumers choose pure electric vehicles not only consider that new energy vehicles can give priority to obtaining indicators to meet their commuting needs, but also value the new travel mode and use habits of electric vehicles.
Therefore, many luxury brand high-end models can also be encountered here, the most gratifying thing is to see a Mercedes-Benz EQS that was just announced at the end of last year in China, and Mercedes-Benz's latest compact pure electric SUV EQA has also been encountered.
As a car editor, I was fortunate enough to experience the driving and riding experience of EQS last month, so I was impressed by it. It is worth mentioning that this encounter is an EQS 580 top-of-the-line model equipped with dual motors, which shows that there are many users who pursue quality and comfort among the people who choose electric vehicles.

Driving a fuel car can also be anxiety
On the way to the Sea Flower Island hotel, I suddenly found that the fuel meter light was on, and I was a little worried about people like me who felt a little flustered when the fuel pointer pointed to less than half of the scale. When I realized that I had missed the last service area on this journey, my inner anxiety increased.
After opening the phone map search, I learned that the nearest gas station still had to travel nearly 20 kilometers, and it seemed to be the only option. So I began to complain that I was too optimistic about the accuracy of the fuel gauge pointer before departure, although it is common sense that in the case of the fuel indicator is just on, it can be said that there is no pressure on the mileage that needs to be driven at present, but suddenly you need to find a gas station, or people feel a little anxious.

However, after carefully looking at the map, it is interesting to see that there are more charging stations nearby than gas stations, and the charging stations are closer. It is worth mentioning that at the Baimajing high-speed rail station next to the high-speed exit, there is actually a Weilai replacement power station, such a charging facility layout, which makes people suddenly envy the owners of electric vehicles.
Fortunately, the small amount of fuel left smoothly made the car reach the gas station, but the annoying thing happened again when it came to the door. Due to the small number of gas stations nearby, coupled with the increase in the number of tourists during the Spring Festival, there was a long queue at the entrance of the gas station, and the length of the line was more than 100 meters.
After a long wait, the gas gauge was finally full. Calculated, from queuing to refueling to paying, it took more than half an hour. Looking at the payment bill on the mobile phone, such a compact sedan, filling a tank of oil actually costs more than four hundred yuan.

Coming out of the gas station, on the way to the hotel, I can't help but think, although this is an extreme situation, but half an hour of time, for an electric car, is also enough to fill the current need for the remaining mileage of electricity, if it is for The owner of Weilai, the time required to change the power will be shorter. Most importantly, the cost of charging is lower than that of fuel.

Electric vehicles became a choice

He was a little surprised that for me, a die-hard fan of oil trucks, there will be a day when the electric car will be "red-eyed". Before that, I never expected that this trip would make me feel such an emotion.
However, Hainan Island is indeed fertile ground for electric vehicles.
Thanks to the unique geographical conditions, Hainan will not be affected by the cold cold air in the north, the battery of the electric vehicle will not affect the performance of the battery because of the low temperature, and the impact of temperature on the endurance is relatively small. In addition, due to the high energy consumption of the air conditioning and heating system of most electric vehicles, when driving in a cold environment, the impact of the open heating air on the endurance is also relatively large. At this point, southern cities are relatively friendly to electric vehicles.

In addition to the advantage of suitable temperature, the geographical conditions of Hainan Island are also very ideal. Simply put, the area is not large. The six-day, five-night trip around the island has a total mileage of only 1,127 kilometers, which also includes some attractions and shuttles and commutes within the city.
This is also the biggest advantage of Hainan Island, that is, the commuting distance between cities does not need to be very long. Unlike some provinces in the mainland, the neighboring counties and cities in Hainan Province are very close, and if cross-regional travel is required, it does not take a long driving time to reach, so the mileage requirements for electric vehicles will be greatly reduced.
If you only need to travel across regions in close proximity, there will naturally be no sense of mileage anxiety. According to the calculation of this journey, the average daily mileage is less than 200 kilometers, which is easy for the mainstream electric vehicles currently on the market, which only need to be charged 2-3 times in the middle of the entire journey. If there happens to be a charging facility next to the rented hotel, it will basically not affect the travel time due to charging energy.

Most importantly, we rented a 100,000-class family car. At this level of fuel vehicles, it can be said that there is no intelligence at all, adaptive cruise, lane keeping these functions do not dare to think, even voice control and Bluetooth. When driving on the highway, I miss the family car, at least it has the ACC system that allows people to drive at high speeds without having to keep on the accelerator.
Looking back, for electric vehicles at the same price, intelligent driving assistance systems have long been standard. If you choose a higher-priced electric model, with more lidar and processors, you will go faster in the field of intelligence, and you can also achieve a higher level of automatic driving assistance functions, which is easier and labor-saving for long-distance driving and relatively improves safety.

Hainan electrification is leading the way
The number of electric vehicle users in Hainan is increasing, and the overall feeling in Hainan these days can be directly quantified from the data. By the end of last year, 48,400 new energy vehicles were promoted in the personal field in Hainan Province, accounting for 82.4% of the total. The number of new energy vehicles purchased by individuals is increasing, indicating that the public's recognition of new energy vehicles, including electric vehicles, is increasing.
In the past two years, with the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Zone and the encouragement policy of "banning the sale of fuel vehicles on Hainan Island in 2030", Hainan has become a national-level demonstration zone for the global application of new energy vehicles, and it has also become the first provincial-level administrative region in the country to clearly ban the sale of fuel vehicles. In terms of policy, Hainan has shown its determination to electrify.

In the past 2021, the growth rate of new energy vehicle ownership in Hainan ranked first in the country. A total of 58,700 new energy vehicles were promoted in the whole year, an increase of 88% year-on-year, and 235% of the annual promotion target was completed, and the number of new energy vehicles in the province has reached 122,400, with a growth rate of 91%. Today, Hainan's new ride-hailing vehicles and taxis have all been updated to new energy vehicles.
In terms of policy encouragement, in the infrastructure is also following up, the most intuitive feeling is that the refueling experience, actually found that the charging station is more than the gas station. By consulting the public data of the Hainan Provincial Development and Reform Commission, as of the end of last year, Hainan Province added 20,938 new charging piles that year, completed 209.4% of the annual plan, and built a total of 47,202 charging piles.
In addition, Hainan built 20 new substations with 724 batteries throughout last year, and built 32 substations with 1,087 batteries. The construction of charging piles in 44 highway service areas in the province is 100% full coverage, and the coverage rate of charging piles in 202 townships in the province is 93.6%. Under such conditions as the acceleration of the construction of charging and refueling facilities, driving an electric vehicle has become a new choice for comfort.

More importantly, under the encouragement of multiple policies, choosing electric vehicles has become a way to save money. After all, for daily travel, in the face of high fuel costs, fuel vehicles really feel that people can't afford to drive, if it is a large-displacement luxury car, I am afraid it will make people more worried.
When the technology of electric vehicles continues to improve, more and more high-quality pure electric vehicle models pour into the market, coupled with the suitable car environment on Hainan Island, presumably the development of electric vehicles will be pushed to a new high here. Driving an electric car along the coastal road, without hot exhaust emissions, listening to beautiful music, and feeling the summer sea breeze, it is a very pleasant feeling to think.
When I was about to leave, I left a wish: when I came to Hainan in the future, I might choose to rent an electric car to travel. If the mileage of electric vehicles can have a higher breakthrough, with the continuous expansion of the number of charging stations on the island, perhaps in the near future, fuel vehicles will become a "rare species" on Hainan Island.
