Prime's version of "The Lord of the Rings" exposed a large number of stills, and it is reported that the cost of the first season was as high as $465 million, which is the most expensive American drama in history.

Filmed in New Zealand, the first eight-episode season began airing on 2 September 2022, with a total of five seasons planned.

Set in the Second Age, thousands of years before the film versions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien's most powerful villain threatens to cover the world with darkness, and the heroes' lives hang in the balance, testing and witnessing the kingdom's transition from prosperity to decay and decadence, but also witnessing the formation of powerful mana.
