Tolkien and Lewis: The love-hate relationship between the masters
Before inviting out the many poisonous remarks of the two big men, it is necessary to talk about the complex and pure love-hate relationship between Tuo Liu. Long before they began their respective novels, Tolkien and Lewis had become close friends because of what they had in common: they shared the same interest in language, poetry, mythology, and storytelling, both avoided contemporary culture, and were neither car-driven nor willing to drive.
In their fledgling careers as novelists, they were each other's first and even only readers. They both belonged to the later well-known "Ink Elephant Society" group and exchanged their mythological creations by reading aloud. In fact, Tolkien and Lewis's literary creations can even be regarded as "the mutual cutting of the legs of the cold pit players"—Lewis once proposed to Tolkien, saying, "Tollers, there are so few stories we really like."
