With the approaching of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, the attention of all sectors of society to the winter Olympic competition venues and winter Olympic villages has continued to rise. See the venue from different perspectives

In the history of the Winter Olympic Games and the Summer Olympic Games, the display of Olympic venues combined with three-dimensional real-life scenery and panoramic navigation is a groundbreaking "first". From the first survey and shooting on September 2, 2019 to the final data collection before the closed-loop management of the venue on January 4, 2022, the four young people of the Economic Daily -China Economic Network took more than 180 drones and 291,600 photos... They measured the venue hundreds of times with their feet back and forth.

After 492 days of filming and production, on January 4, 2022, the panoramic navigation system of the Media Center of the Beijing Winter Olympic Venues was put into operation, providing an important information channel for media reporters and staff to understand the venues of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, and also leaving a large amount of valuable visual information. A few days ago, the panoramic all-dimensional tour system of "'Flying Arrival' Exploration of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics" for ordinary audiences has also been officially launched, providing an immersive experience scene for the audience to understand the Winter Olympic venues and feel the atmosphere of the Winter Olympics.

"The navigation system can independently find angles, zoom in on details, and experience scenes by manually dragging or sliding, enhancing the audience's sense of participation and achieving an experience upgrade from 'reading' to 'entering'." Team leader Dong Jiapeng told reporters that this time the tour system uses panoramic media technology, thanks to the economic daily - China Economic Network on the "panorama + news" reporting form of innovation. Since 2017, the Economic Daily-China Economic Network has begun to explore the application of panoramic image technology in news reporting, and the panoramic report of the Beijing World Horticultural Exposition planned and produced in 2019 won the first prize of the 30th China Journalism Award.

In October 2020, the Economic Daily-China Economic Network team was given the opportunity to serve the Winter Olympics. "We want to apply the best communication technology to the display of the construction of the Winter Olympic venues. To be fortunate enough to participate in the event, everyone on the team gave their best. Dong Jiapeng said.

Witness China's speed

The special shooting experience allowed the team members to witness the footprints and the most beautiful moments of the "growth" of the Winter Olympic venues.

Dong Jiapeng still remembers the scene when he first went to Zhangjiakou in 2020 to investigate, "at that time, the location of the venue was still a construction site, and it was impossible to distinguish where was the track and where the auxiliary facilities were." Since then, every once in a while, he has to shoot at the venue, "sometimes after just a week or two, I can be pleasantly surprised to find that the facilities of the venue are much more complete than the last shooting."

Dong Jiapeng still finds photos recorded in the same venue and at the same angle from time to time. "Spring, summer, autumn and winter rotate through the four seasons, and it feels so shocking to see these venues from scratch, brick by brick to towering!"

"In November 2020, when I went to Beijing Winter Olympic Village to shoot, the building was still a rough house, and the road surface was muddy and difficult to walk. Unexpectedly, just a few days later, the relevant person in charge of the Beijing Winter Olympic Village told us that the Winter Olympic Village was basically completed, and we were welcome to shoot again. Team member Liang Xi Tian recalled: "This kind of work efficiency refreshed my understanding of 'China Speed'. ”

"We've shot an average of 10 times at each venue, and in each of those comparisons, we found their most beautiful moments." Dong Jiapeng said.

In September 2021, team member Li Zhuo and Dong Jiapeng went to Yanqing To investigate and shoot together. "After two days of vigil, the weather conditions were either cloudy or rainy, the drone could not take off, until the 3rd day the weather turned clear, we waited until 5 pm to get permission to fly, in the sunset, the National Snowmobile Bobsleigh Center 'Snow Dragon' meandered on the cliffs of the green mountains, and the golden brilliance naturally rendered the Yanqing Winter Olympic Village." Li Zhuo said that the moment recorded in the photo became an eternal moment in his heart.

Present a panoramic event

In order to perfectly present the style of the Beijing Winter Olympic Venues and the Winter Olympic Village, the production team has encountered many "troubles". Filming of the Winter Olympic venues often needs to be done outdoors, sometimes the temperature is only minus ten degrees Celsius, and the wind in the valley can overturn the machine. Even so, Ryo Nieda rarely wears a hat and gloves at work. "The camera is touch-screen, and it is not sensitive when you wear gloves; you have to listen to the sound of the shutter 7 times, and you wear a hat for fear of not being able to hear it clearly." Ryo Saida said that the excitement and pride of participating in the Winter Olympics can beat all the harsh working environment.

The interface of the venue tour system is finally presented in the form of illustrations of the Winter Olympic venues, and team member Cui Nan has changed the seven or eight versions of the design drawings before and after. She first extracts the most characteristic elements according to the shape of these venues, and then expresses them with pure hand painting. "For example, the National Aquatics Center 'Water Cube' is composed of many membrane structures, which are irregular and difficult to draw by hand. In order to make it more realistic and beautiful, you can only cut it one by one. Cui Nan said.

In order to present the winter Olympic venues in a panoramic way, a lot of technical surveys and later panoramic roaming work are also needed. "There are a large number of points on the field and stands of the Winter Olympic venues, and there are many interactive points in each direction, and I have made more than 500 interactive points in the most venues, and the workload is not general." Li Zhuo told reporters.

"The 12 Winter Olympic venues, plus 3 Winter Olympic villages, each with a large area, takes a lot of time just to get familiar with these venues." Dong Jiapeng introduced that according to the previous work experience and the preliminary survey, it takes at least 3 days to shoot a venue, but because of the construction progress of the venue and the epidemic prevention requirements, the final shooting time left for a venue is only 1 day.

The production team racked their brains to find ways to consult the data, technical research, and there was no ready-made equipment on the market, so they did it themselves. They matched and installed a variety of electric gimbals and controllers, debugged them again and again, and finally transformed the manual panoramic shooting into automatic panoramic shooting, improving the shooting efficiency and successfully completing the shooting and production tasks.

"The final product has far exceeded the delivery standards, and a lot of our work is actually self-pressurizing, hoping it will be better." Dong Jiapeng said that in addition to serving the Winter Olympics, they hope that all their efforts can become precious materials for recording the Beijing Winter Olympics.
