Samsung releases the industry's first all-in-one fingerprint security IC for debit/credit card payments

IT House January 26 news, Samsung announced the launch of a one-piece fingerprint security IC called S3B512C, for biometric payment cards. According to reports, future debit or credit cards may be equipped with Samsung's new fingerprint security IC to enhance security and fraud protection.

Samsung says the S3B512C is the industry's first solution to integrate fingerprint sensors, secure elements (SE) and secure processors in a single chip. Fingerprint scanners are used to read biometric data, Tamper-Proof Secure Element (SE) stores and validates encrypted data, while Security Processor analyzes and processes biometric data.

The new IC uses a proprietary fingerprint authentication algorithm to analyze the unique characteristics of the user's fingerprint. The chip also features anti-spoofing technology that prevents fraudsters from using artificial fingerprints and other illegal methods to deceive security systems.

Samsung says the performance of its new security IC meets MasterCard's Biometric Evaluation Program Summary (BEPS) specification and is certified by EMVCo and Common Criteria Assessment Assurance Level (CC EAL) 6+.

"The S3B512C combines a fingerprint sensor, Secure Element (SE), and security processor to add an extra layer of authentication and security to payment cards. The S3B512C is primarily designed for payment cards, but can also be used for cards that require highly secure authentication, such as student or employee identity, membership, or building access," said Kenny Han, vice president of marketing at LSI, Samsung Electronic Systems.

IT House understands that Samsung says that on the one hand, biometric authentication means that users do not need to manually enter a PIN code when shopping. On the other hand, if the card is lost or stolen, the IC greatly reduces the chance of fraudulent transactions, as transactions cannot be made without verifying the cardholder's fingerprints.

Samsung says its fingerprint security IC is primarily used for payment cards, but can also be used for other cards that require secure authentication, such as employee or student ID.
