India's smartphone sales performance in 2021 lived up to expectations and was another year of Chinese brands dominating the list. From the data, the total sales of smartphones in India increased by 12% year-on-year last year. The top 5 brands on the list are 4 from China, namely Xiaomi, vivo, realme, oppo, which occupy a total of 68% of the market share; Xiaomi ranks first, and South Korea's Samsung ranks second.
As the "smartphone brother" of the Indian market, Xiaomi shipped more than 40 million mobile phones last year. Xiaomi accounts for 25% of the Indian market, while Samsung accounts for only 19%. However, optimistic about the growth potential of the Indian market, Samsung has made plans to increase the Indian smartphone market in 2022. A few days ago, Samsung and Apple jointly announced that they will strive to produce $5 billion (31.6 billion yuan) of smartphones in India this year, and export some of them overseas.
You know, originally Samsung set up its main product line in Vietnam. Unexpectedly, in the second quarter of 2021, Vietnam's epidemic prevention and control measures seriously affected the operation of Samsung's factories in Vietnam. As a result, Samsung announced in November last year that it would rearrange the production capacity of its seven production bases at home and abroad, and also planned to distribute some of Vietnam's smartphone production capacity to India and Indonesia.
Previously, Samsung set up two smartphone factories in Vietnam. In 2020, the two factories in Vietnam produced nearly 180 million mobile phones for Samsung, accounting for 60% of Samsung's total smartphone production capacity. According to Samsung's preliminary ideas, in 2022, it is hoped that the proportion of smartphone production capacity in Vietnam will drop to 50%, and it is estimated that the annual production capacity will drop to 160 million units.
On the other hand, the capacity of the Indonesian factory has been increased from 10 million units per year to 18 million units per year. Samsung had planned to increase India's annual production by about 33 million units. However, as mentioned in the three articles, Samsung and Apple have made new moves on Indian manufacturing, and the expansion of Indian factories is expected to be higher than 33 million units.
