With the theme of "Light of Life", the 9th China Beijing International Art Biennale 2022 joined the "Meet in Beijing" Olympic Cultural Festival and the 22nd "Meet in Beijing" International Art Festival at the invitation of the Cultural Activities Department of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, pushing the warm-up cultural and artistic atmosphere of the Beijing Winter Olympics to a climax, and to a certain extent, making up for the regret that due to the consideration of epidemic prevention and control, the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics did not have a special literary and artistic performance.

What are the highlights of this exhibition? What are the difficulties in the curatorial process? What are the features of the new special exhibition?

In the press conference to answer reporters' questions, these answers were revealed one by one.

Q: What are the highlights of this exhibition?

Wang Yong introduced that the theme of the third Beijing Biennale, which matched the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, was "Color and the Olympics", focusing more on the Olympic Games and sports themselves. The theme of the 9th China Beijing International Art Biennale 2022, "Light of Life", continues the artistic pluralism of "Color and the Olympics", and has been expanded and extended.

The theme of this year's Beijing Biennale, "The Light of Life", covers the spirit of fighting the epidemic and the Olympic spirit, focusing on the value, dignity, energy and brilliance of human life. The spirit of fighting the epidemic and the spirit of the Olympic Games have a broad space for interpretation and rich humanistic connotations, not only belong to the athletes on the field and the white-clad angels in the emergency room, as General Secretary Xi Jinping said at the National Commendation Conference for Fighting the New Crown Pneumonia Epidemic: There are no heroes who fall from the sky in the world, only mortals who stand up. Every ordinary person who strives to live and constantly improves himself has flashed the brilliance of life, which has been excavated and portrayed by artists who are good at discovery. At the same time, historical events, sports, venue buildings, cityscapes, flag signs, sacred flames, torches, mascots, costumes, medals, bouquets related to the Olympic Games... The Humanistic Olympics, etc., are reflected in the creations of artists. In particular, it is worth mentioning that Beijing, as the first "city of the Double Olympic Games" in the history of the Olympic Games, has also seen many excellent works showing the style of Beijing's capital, the love affair of the Olympic Games and the construction of winter Olympic venues, which are very worth seeing. At the same time, the artists did not ignore Zhangjiakou, as a co-host city of the Winter Olympics, and the style of Zhangjiakou City was also brilliantly presented in the exhibited works.

In short, at a time when all mankind is facing the challenges of the new crown epidemic, the 24th Winter Olympic Games and The Winter Paralympic Games in 2022 are undoubtedly of extraordinary significance in Zhangjiakou, Beijing, China. The 2022 Ninth China Beijing International Art Biennale was included by the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee into the "Meet in Beijing" Olympic Cultural Festival and the 22nd "Meet in Beijing" International Art Festival, with the theme of "Light of Life", interpreting the anti-epidemic spirit and Olympic spirit in a broader sense from the perspective of art, setting off the humanistic and artistic atmosphere of the Winter Olympics, and once again bringing all mankind together through the Olympic spirit with the purpose of mutual understanding, friendship, unity and fair competition. We all celebrate the nobility and brilliance of life inspired by sport.

Q: What are the difficulties in the curatorial process?

Tao Qin said that the 9th China Beijing International Art Biennale in 2022 has distinctive features and many highlights. Due to the global pandemic, this year's call for papers should be the most difficult one ever. The severe epidemic prevention situation in the world is needless to say, the country is also due to the epidemic situation brought about by many changes, the routine application for approval of the exhibition is more complicated and long than in previous sessions, under the active communication of the staff of the Biennale Organizing Committee, the approval departments try to provide convenience and give the green light, the 2022 Ninth China Beijing International Art Biennale for the first time in the industry without holding a press conference to prepare for the launch of the press conference to launch the creation of the draft, for the majority of artists to win more than a month of creative time. Even so, the total time left for manuscripts and creations is only 3 and a half months, which is still the most tense in the previous Beijing Biennale. In order to help domestic and foreign artists create, the Organizing Committee of the Biennale also specially produced 16 WeChat posts with pictures and texts, including Olympic history, Olympic spirit, Olympic venues, Olympic figures, life and health, sports power and other content. Under the unprecedented limitations, the staff of the Biennale Organizing Committee tried their best to contact domestic and foreign artists and institutions through various unconventional ways such as telephone, fax, and mail, and vigorously promoted the 9th China Beijing International Art Biennale in 2022 through WeChat, official website, brochures and other publicity channels.

The creative enthusiasm of domestic and foreign artists is quite full and high, and they have changed "impossible" into "possible" in a very limited creative time, and strive to complete many masterpieces. In particular, the participating artists are also the author of the large-scale theme creation "Together to the Future - Welcome to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics", and also mobilized artists and calligraphers to take the initiative to draw and write 296 fans for the 9th China Beijing International Art Biennale in 2022, as the exhibition organizers gave the "Olympic theme" cultural creation to guests such as the embassy in China attending the opening ceremony, and it is also a very warm way to promote the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Artists from all over the world have interpreted what is the "light of life" with their perseverance. The number of applications for special exhibitions is not inferior to that of previous editions, and embassies, cultural departments and art institutions of many countries have actively contacted and communicated with the Biennale Organizing Committee to promote it. After the deadline at the end of August 2021, after strict preliminary evaluation and re-evaluation, 117 countries and regions and 707 exhibited works were selected.

Q: What are the features of this new special exhibition?

Wang Yong introduced that in the process of international call for papers, the Organizing Committee of the Biennale actively contacted the cultural departments of the embassies in China and the cultural departments of the mainland embassies abroad and international art institutions, and expanded the contact countries to more than 150 countries on five continents; for the outstanding artists selected in the past, one-on-one sending emails and making international calls, inviting them to submit articles and also inviting them to recommend to familiar artists; the planning committees also did their best to mobilize familiar international artists to participate in the exhibition. Multi-pronged approach has formed today's rich exhibition landscape.

Curated by a European female curator, Lucia Solinger, the "Special Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Twelve European Countries" takes "the European spirit derived from cultural diversity" as the starting point, interpreting the uniqueness of the European spirit and the sense of identity of Europeans through the works of well-known artists from twelve European countries. The "Special Exhibition of Contemporary Art in 12 European Countries" was selected to be unveiled on the international cultural and artistic exchange platform of the 9th China Beijing International Art Biennale in 2022, which is committed to opening a door for Chinese audiences to understand the European spirit.

The famous 20th-century Italian painter Giorgio Morandi is now well known in China, but most viewers only know the Italian artist's oil paintings with high gray tones, but may overlook that prints are also an important creation of Morandi. Between 1930 and 1956, Morandi taught printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where he experimented more with the medium of printmaking. In addition to presenting the rich creative face of Morandi's oil paintings to Chinese audiences, what is even more valuable is that all the works exhibited in this special exhibition are original prints produced by Morandi himself, rather than widely circulated reproduction prints on the market.

With the theme of "Sniffing roses - the art of life", the International Women Artists Contemporary Art Special Exhibition exhibits representative works created by influential contemporary international female artists, including Chen Xi, Shen Ling, Xiang Jing, Yan Ping, Yu Hong, and other artists in China, and artists such as Canadian Jessidan Ali, Annette Sauermann of Germany, Reiko Ikemura of Switzerland, and Ross Wylie of the United Kingdom. This special exhibition takes the artistic practice of female artists as the research object, and takes this as the core, focusing on the interactive relationship between the creation of female artists and society and culture.
