The news was confirmed by Robert Young, a senior guinness record adviser who helped Garcia last September to confirm that he was the record holder for the longest-lived man at the time of 112 years and 211 days. Garcia could have celebrated his 113th birthday next month.

Born on February 11, 1909 in León, Spain, Garcia married Antonia Gutierrez in 1933. Because Garcia was only 1.5 meters tall at the time, he was spared conscription during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Garcia founded a shoe factory and later developed into a small enterprise, becoming a well-known local military boot manufacturer.

Garcia and his wife have raised seven daughters, and there are dozens of descendants so far, including 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Another hobby Garcia developed outside of work is playing soccer, not only supporting Leon's team, but also co-founding a local team with others. At the age of 110, teammates on the football team paid tribute to him, celebrating him as the oldest member of the club.
