Smart and studious at a young age

In 1892, Tao Zhiyue was born in Xianfeng Township, Ningxiang City, Hunan Province. He was born in a very awkward era, at the end of the Qing Dynasty, when the great powers invaded.

In 1898, at the age of 6, Tao Zhiyue was sent to a private school to study, and received an early enlightenment education. He was diligent and studious, and through his own efforts, he was successively admitted to Qiuzhong Primary School and Hunan Army Primary School. In the army primary school, Tao Zhiyue came into contact with revolutionary ideas and met a large number of new young people with ideas and ambitions, and he followed these new young people to actively participate in the anti-imperialist and anti-feudal patriotic student movement.

Three years later, Tao Zhiyue graduated from school and was assigned to the 8th Division of the Beiyuan Army for training, and began his military career. Tao Zhiyue performed well in the training process, obeyed orders, and was quickly appreciated by his superiors. His superiors recommended him to the Baoding Army Officer School for further study, and after he graduated, he was appointed as a captain's staff officer in the Staff Office of the Hunan Provincial Governor's Office.

After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Tao Zhiyue put forward the idea of "opposing the civil war and unanimously resisting Japan" and actively participated in the War of Resistance Against Japan. Being able to put forward this proposition can be seen how high Tao Zhiyue's ideological consciousness was at that time. During the war, Tao Zhiyue successively served as the commander of the Kuomintang 76th Army and the commander of the 8th Division, the commander of the First Army of the First Theater, the director of the Political Department of the First Theater, and led the army to participate in the Battle of Songhu in 1937.

After the outbreak of the Liberation War, Tao Zhiyue was stationed in Xinjiang and other places, and he did not want to fight with our army, so he adopted a delaying tactic, delayed sending troops, and secretly maintained close contact with our army. It can be said that at this time, Tao Zhiyue already had the idea of revolting and peacefully liberating Xinjiang.

In the later stages of the war, with the help of members of our Party, Tao Zhiyue led 100,000 Kuomintang officers and soldiers in an uprising in Xinjiang in September 1949, and actively cooperated with our Party in completing the work of liberating Xinjiang, quelling the riots of all ethnic groups and safeguarding ethnic unity.

He joined our party at the age of 90

During this period, Tao Zhiyue did not forget to continue to study communist ideas, and after Tao Zhiyue made a series of achievements, some people recommended him to join the Communist Party of China, but Tao Zhiyue politely refused. Because Tao Zhiyue had always been concerned about his kuomintang status and had fought with our army in the early days of the revolutionary war, he refused the proposal to join our party.

However, Tao Zhiyue's achievements were obvious to all, and with the improvement of his ideological consciousness, the mainland awarded him the rank of general at the conferment conference in 1955, and in September 1982, it agreed to his application to join the party. Tao Zhiyue also finally joined the Chinese Communist Party, when he was 90 years old and participated in the Sixth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

On December 26, 1988, Tao Zhiyue died of illness in Changsha, Hunan Province, at the age of 97, and was buried in the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery.
