The Przewalski's wild horse is a nationally protected animal and is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is native to the Junggar Basin in Xinjiang, China, and western Mongolia. A hundred years ago, due to Western poaching, environmental changes and other factors, wild horses were once endangered in China. Since the reform and opening up, the Chinese government and several generations of wild horse conservation workers have made arduous efforts to promote the return of wild horses to nature and rebuild wild populations. By the end of 2020, the total number of wild horses on the mainland exceeded 700, accounting for nearly one-third of the total number of wild horses in the world. China's wild horse conservation experience has become an internationally recognized success model for saving endangered species and protecting biodiversity.
