Liao Hansheng, a native of Sangzhi, Hunan, joined the revolution at the age of 16, and was highly regarded by He Long because of his outstanding performance, and in July 1933, he joined the Communist Party of China, successively serving as the secretary of the political department of the Red Third Army, the political commissar of the Ninth Division, and participated in the creation of the Qiandong Soviet District.
In the course of the Red Army's Long March, he adhered to the party's operational policy and made great contributions to the victory of the Red Fourth Front and the Red Army.
After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he served as the deputy commander of the 716th Regiment of the 358th Brigade of the 120th Division of the Eighth Route Army, leading his subordinates to defeat the enemy at Yanmen Pass, cutting off the transportation line of the Japanese army, and then annihilating a large group of the Japanese army in the battle of talc, making outstanding contributions to the correct overall strategic layout of the central authorities. In 1939, he led the 716th Regiment into Jizhong, and under his command, the troops won successive battles and broke the enemy's encirclement of the base area in Jizhong.
After the battle of Chen Zhuang, considering his outstanding military command talent, the organization called liao Hansheng and appointed him as the director of the political department of the 358 brigade. The 358th Brigade is a main brigade with a fine tradition, the military quality of the soldiers is very high, if he can serve as a brigade commander, it will give greater play to the combat effectiveness of this brigade. However, he modestly said that his ability was not enough, and he first exercised in the position of political commissar of the 716 regiment of the 358 brigade.
The organization talked to him, hoping that he would not be stressed and work for a while, but he still politely refused. During his time as political commissar of the 716th Brigade, he led the troops to participate in the anti-"sweeping" campaign and the Hundred Regiments War, and later promoted to deputy political commissar of the 358th Brigade.
In 1949, the First Field Army was established, the commander of the First Corps was General Wang Zhen, Peng Dehuai thought of Liao Hansheng for the first time when he was choosing a political commissar candidate, so he came to talk to him, but he did not expect that Liao Hansheng chose to refuse, he still thought that his ability was not enough, And Peng Laozong persuaded him several times to no avail, so he let him first serve as the political commissar of the First Army of the First Corps and exercise it. In September of the same year, Qinghai was liberated, and he served as the director of the Military and Political Committee of Qinghai Province.
When he was awarded the rank in 1955, with his seniority was enough to become a founding general, but when he heard that his rank was general, he thought that the organization set itself too high, so he asked the organization to demote him to the rank of lieutenant general, and after Hearing about it, Mr. Peng personally persuaded him to accept it, but he just did not agree, this matter was later known to the chairman, the chairman was very appreciative of his approach, in order to set an example for all the generals, he agreed to his request.
In order to meet the needs of army building in the new period, Liao Hansheng chose to study at the military academy, and two years later he graduated with excellent results, and the organization hoped that he would become the dean of the military academy. This time he chose to refuse again, but this time the organization did not promise him, making him obey the arrangement, and finally he agreed to it.
In 1993, the position of vice president of the country became vacant, and the organization asked Liao Hansheng to take over, but he refused three times, believing that this position allowed capable young people to be competent, not only for the good of the party, but also for the good of the whole country.
General Liao Hansheng, with a cautious attitude to treat his every opportunity, he did not dare to accept, but with a responsible attitude to learn humbly, after having a grasp of the competent, he not only won the trust of the organization, but also made him get the higher the position, the general's approach is indeed admirable.
On October 5, 2006, the general died in Beijing at the age of 95.
