In 1990, the authoritative Chinese historical book "Contemporary China Series: The War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea", compiled by the Academy of Military Sciences, gave a very high evaluation to a battle against the United States and aid korea, calling it "a miracle in the history of war."
This battle was an ambush of three thousand people commanded by a generation of famous generals Zheng Weishan.
During the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, when the corps-level commanders of the Volunteer Army were awarded the rank of general in 1955, Zheng Weishan, acting commander of the 20th Corps, was a rare lieutenant general, and he was personally ordered by Commander-in-Chief Peng to enter the DPRK. It is not difficult to see from this that Zheng Weishan is a real general.
After Zheng Weishan entered the Jincheng area to fight, he personally traveled to various positions of the corps, and he found a big problem, that is, the enemy took the three highlands of Cross Mountain, 949.2, and 883.7 as the base point, posing a serious threat to the "wedge" of our army's position. This area is 9 kilometers deep, about 20 kilometers wide, and condescending, overlooking the area of the volunteer army more than ten kilometers deep.

Zheng Weishan secretly made up his mind: this "wedge" must be pulled out!
In May 1953, after in-depth thinking, Zheng Weishan proposed a combat plan: send a force of 3,000 people to hide in advance to the enemy's front, and launch an attack after dark the next day to seize the "three ox legs" occupied by the enemy.
This plan startled the more than fifty volunteer generals who came to watch the battle, because the plan was really bold--how easy was it to let a force of three thousand people go under the eyes of the enemy? You know, that's where the enemy can hit it with only a grenade!
What was even more surprising was that Zheng Weishan actually wanted to annihilate two regiments of the enemy army in one go, and his appetite was too big! Prior to this, the volunteer army fought a small-scale offensive battle, and there was still a big disadvantage in weapons and equipment, and the air supremacy was still in the hands of the enemy.
Of course, Zheng Weishan was not a whimist, and he repeatedly deliberated and carefully prepared for this battle. As early as half a year ago, he ordered Zhang Zuyu, commander of the Sixty Army, to protect the vegetation in the lurking area, and resolutely not allow the enemy to go down the mountain, and those who dared to go down the mountain would let the snipers kill them without mercy.
Zhang Zuyu, commander of the Sixty Army, took the lead in standing up and expressing his position: Full support and resolute implementation! He will lead the generals of the Sixty Army to take two heights, 949.2 and 883.7, and complete the task of annihilating one regiment of the enemy.
Zhang Zuyu's idea was simple: he wanted the Sixty Army( especially the 180 division, which had suffered heavy losses before, to regain its prestige with a victory.
Qiu Wei, commander of the Sixty-seventh Army, was not to be outdone, and said that he would bite down another of the "three ox legs", the Mountain of Crosses, and also annihilate a regiment of the enemy.
The two generals actively invited the battle, and Zheng Weishan was overjoyed. However, just as he was preparing to finalize the battle plan, the head of the Volunteer Command called and pointed out that the conditions for fighting this battle were not yet ripe, and that it was not recommended to take action, and that the commander of the Twenty Corps should reconsider it.
Zheng Weishan's answer was only a categorical sentence: "My determination to fight this battle has been determined, and I am responsible for any problems!" ”
Zheng Weishan knew very well in his heart that not only did the chiefs of the Zhi Division not support himself in fighting this battle, but there were also a large number of cadres at all levels of the Twenty Corps who held opposing views. If this battle is really not fought, it is really possible that I will not be able to wash away this insult for the rest of my life.
However, no matter what kind of selfish distractions, in the face of the sense of honor and responsibility of the soldiers, it is not worth mentioning, Zheng Weishan believes in his own judgment, and is also mentally prepared to bear all the consequences.
After hanging up the phone, Zheng Weishan faced the generals and said with a solemn face: "It is imperative to fight this battle." If I make a mistake, I Zheng someone will bear the consequences themselves, and if you want to kill the head, you will kill me Zheng Weishan! ”
Seeing that the commander was trying to overcome the public opinion, Commander Zhang Zuyu was also deeply moved: "Acting Commander, if there is any problem, I will carry it with you!" ”
Zheng Weishan replied, "What do you want to carry?" You just have to fight the battle! Something went wrong, cutting off my old Zheng's head is enough! ”
This kind of courage of "although tens of millions of people are presented to the past" made Xu Shiyou, a famous general of the generation who was "not afraid of heaven and not afraid", also impressed: "I have always been bold in fighting wars, but your old Zheng's courage is bigger than mine!" ”
Subsequently, the Sixty And Sixty-seventh Army had a total of 15 and a half infantry companies, 4 machine gun companies, and as many as 3,500 people entered the predetermined area as planned to lurk, and the soldiers overcame many difficulties and completed the stealth task excellently.
At dawn on June 10, Zheng Weishan and the spectators came together to Longmen Mountain, which is less than 6 miles from the 883.7 plateau, to observe the situation in the area where the lurking troops are located with binoculars. However, they unexpectedly found that in that area, apart from the branches and grass, there was no trace of any of our army's lurkers.
The crowd was very surprised and asked Zheng Weishan if he had changed the original incubation plan.
This feedback made Zheng Weishan overjoyed: since even the veteran who had been through the battlefield for so long could not find any traces of lurking, the enemy did not expect to find anything suspicious.
At 20:20 that night, 259 artillery pieces simultaneously roared at the volunteer artillery position, pouring more than 10,000 shells into the enemy position.
After a few minutes of heavy artillery fire, the officers and men of the ROK army were scattered and were so bombed that they climbed out of the shelter and prepared to enter the field fortifications to meet the volunteers. But only a few minutes later, they were swept back by heavy artillery fire.
The volunteers' attacks became more ferocious, and after the third fire raid, they blew up the enemy positions into a sea of fire, and the smoke rising from the ground and the rolling clouds in the sky were all red.
Then, more than 3,000 soldiers of the 180th Division roared and launched a charge, and it took only 50 minutes to completely annihilate the 27th Regiment of the ROK Army.
The war progressed unusually well, with the 902.8, 973, and 883.7 heights falling under the control of the volunteers. Commander Zhang Zuyu was even more overjoyed, because the 180th Division was ashamed of this battle and fought a hearty turnaround battle!
In the defensive battle that followed, the volunteer units participating in the battle became more and more courageous, continuously expanded their achievements, and completed the combat objectives set by Zheng Weishan beyond expectations.
It is no exaggeration to say that the famous general Zheng Weishan, who defied the public opinion and directed a good drama of a 3,500-person ambush, was not only the most splendid classic example of the volunteer army during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, but also created a miracle in the history of Chinese and foreign wars.
