"Archaeological China" focuses on the prehistoric civilization of Tibet and reports 4 archaeological achievements

Beijing, 13 Jan (China Youth Daily) -- This morning, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage held a work meeting on the important progress of the "Archaeology in China" major project in Beijing, reporting on four important archaeological achievements, including the Chere Site, the Mahao Site, the Gebu Sailu Site, and the Dangxiong Cemetery, focusing on important archaeological discoveries and research progress in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The Chere Site in Gar County is a Paleolithic wilderness site in the early Holocene, archaeology has found continuous accumulation of cultural layers, excavated more than 5,000 relics mainly of stone products, and found fire ponds, ash pits and other human activity remains. More than 2,000 relics have been excavated from a dense distribution area of stone products, which are speculated to be the remains of ancient people making stone tools and buried in situ; the discovery of two types of stone tool technology, stone chip industry and fine stone leaf industry, speculated to be the remains of human activities in two different periods, shows that ancient humans have experienced at least two repeated occupation processes in this area, filling the gap in the prehistoric archaeological culture of the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.

The Machu Ruins in Kangma County (4,410 meters above sea level) is the site of a prehistoric settlement dating back about 4,000 years. Archaeology has found relics of human life such as fire ponds and tombs, and excavated relics such as stone tools, pottery, bone tools, mussel ornaments, talc beads, and jade pipe beads. The tomb shape has two types of sarcophagus tombs and vertical pit tombs, and the pottery decorative patterns are mainly carved and scratched, and the technical style is similar to that of the same period in the Hengduan Mountains. The Machu site represents a new type of archaeological culture, which is of great significance for establishing the sequence of prehistoric archaeological cultures in Tibet and exploring the extreme environmental processes and strategies of human adaptation to high cold and lack of oxygen.

Two periods of tombs were found, the first period is 3600 to 3000 years old, mainly stone chamber tombs, reflecting the economic characteristics of animal husbandry and hunting. The second period dates from 2700 to 2100, mainly based on cave tombs, excavated pottery is mainly sand reddish brown round bottom ware, mostly decorated with thick rope patterns and carved patterns, stamps, this type of remains are widely found in the middle reaches of the Xiangquan River. The Gebusailu site is of great value for the study of the exchange and migration of people in the Xiangquan River Basin, and the formation and development of regional cultures.
