On January 11, the Ministry of Public Security released the 2021 national motor vehicle and driver data. According to the Ministry of Public Security, the number of motor vehicles in the country will reach 395 million in 2021, including 302 million cars; 481 million motor vehicle drivers and 444 million car drivers. In 2021, there will be 36.74 million newly registered motor vehicles and 27.5 million newly licensed drivers nationwide.

By the end of 2021, the number of motor vehicles in the country reached 395 million, and the number of scrap cancellations after deduction of scrapping and cancellation increased by 23.5 million units over 2020, an increase of 6.32%. In 2021, there were 36.74 million newly registered motor vehicles nationwide, an increase of 3.46 million over 2020, an increase of 10.38%; an increase of 4.6 million over 2019, an increase of 14.31%.

By the end of 2021, the number of cars in the country will reach 302 million. In 2021, there will be 26.22 million newly registered cars nationwide, an increase of 1.98 million over 2020, an increase of 8.16%. Among them, 4.04 million trucks were newly registered, 120,000 fewer than in 2020, down 2.88%, showing a downward trend. There were 10.05 million newly registered motorcycles, an increase of 1.79 million over 2020, an increase of 21.67%, and maintained rapid growth in the past three years.

By the end of 2021, the number of new energy vehicles in the country reached 7.84 million, accounting for 2.60% of the total number of vehicles, and the amount of scrap cancellation after deduction of scrap cancellation increased by 2.92 million units compared with 2020, an increase of 59.25%. Among them, there are 6.4 million pure electric vehicles, accounting for 81.63% of the total number of new energy vehicles. In 2021, there were 2.95 million newly registered new energy vehicles nationwide, accounting for 11.25% of the total number of newly registered vehicles, an increase of 1.78 million units compared with the previous year, an increase of 151.61%. In the past five years, the number of newly registered new energy vehicles has increased from 650,000 in 2017 to 2.95 million in 2021, showing a rapid growth trend.

In 2021, the number of motor vehicle drivers in the country reached 481 million, of which 444 million were car drivers, accounting for 92.24% of the total number of drivers. In 2021, the number of newly licensed drivers (driving age less than 1 year) in the country reached 27.5 million, accounting for 5.72% of the total number of motor vehicle drivers in the country, an increase of 5.19 million over 2020, an increase of 23.25%. From the perspective of driver gender, male drivers reached 319 million people, accounting for 66.4132%, and female drivers 162 million people, accounting for 33.5968%. From the perspective of driver age, 340 million drivers aged 26 to 50, accounting for 70.71%, and 69.66 million drivers aged 51 to 60, accounting for 14.48%.
