Counterattack against Vietnam
Heroic demining, unfortunately wounded
On February 17, 1979, the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam began. The Eastern and Western Armies of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) marched from Guangxi and Yunnan respectively, crossed the Sino-Vietnamese border, and plunged straight into the hinterland of Vietnam. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) attacked more than 20 vietnamese towns in a single month, pointing directly at Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

However, on the way back of the army, an ordinary demining mission completely changed the fate of Yan Ligen.
The troops passed through a minefield on the way back, and a new recruit named Mao Yongde accidentally stepped on a mine. This is an anti-infantry mine, once hit and loosen the foot, the mine will be detonated, the light is missing arms and legs, and the heavy is killed on the spot.
Yan Ligen realized the seriousness of the matter, and he immediately asked Mao Yongde to stop and comforted:

However, because he was too close to the explosion point, Yan Ligen's right eye was blinded, and several shrapnel in his head could no longer be removed.
In desperation, Yan Ligen was sent to the People's Liberation Army 303 Hospital in Nanning, Guangxi Province, for treatment, and has since lost contact with the troops.

The old regimental commander was surprised to see Yan Ligen, and after the comrades-in-arms sent him to the hospital, due to the urgency of the war, coupled with Yan Ligen's transfer, he lost contact with his comrades-in-arms. In order to verify Yan Ligen's situation, the troops wrote to his hometown and did not respond. Therefore, the troops put Yan Ligen's list of sacrifices and erected a tombstone for him in the Fangcheng Martyrs' Cemetery in Guangxi, so that he and his comrades who died were "buried" together.
