During this period, Zhang Zuolin's achievements in suppressing bandits were very outstanding, especially in the process of outwitting the Bandit Du Lisan in western Liaoning, he made great contributions to the Qing court, was appreciated by Xu Shichang, and was quickly promoted, in 1908, Zhang Zuolin had seven battalions under his jurisdiction, and after the outbreak of the Xinhai Revolution in 1911, Zhang Zuolin expanded to fifteen battalions.

Yuan Shikai also understood that the Feng clan was not a concubine after all, so he still sent the Beiyang clan to restrain the three eastern provinces, and in 1915, he sent his confidant Duan Zhigui as an envoy to fengtian patrol to restrain the three eastern provinces, which also made Zhang Zuolin very sad.
In order to be able to ascend to the throne as soon as possible, there has always been a saying that Feng Delin and Zhang Zuolin sang a double reed and calculated Feng Delin before they ascended to the throne.

After Duan Zhigui returned to Beijing, he reported to Yuan Shikai that Feng Delin was unreliable and that Zhang Zuolin was a good person, so Yuan Shikai gave Zhang Zuolin the position of Fengtian Overseer.
In fact, this matter is not as simple as rumors, there are also many complicated things, Yuan Shikai finally chose Zhang Zuolin is well thought-out, on the issue of taking sides, Zhang Zuolin has always stood on the side of the Beiyang government, but Feng Delin has the support of the Japanese and does not take the Beiyang government into account.
Yuan Shikai hated the Japanese the most in his life, and when he was a diplomat in Korea in his early years, he was responsible for resisting Japan, and when Japan finally forced Yuan Shikai to sign the "Twenty-One Articles", it made Yuan Shikai jump like thunder, and before he died, he also said a sentence "to go to a big enemy for Japan."
In such a situation of hatred against Japan, how could he not know what the Japanese were doing in the northeast, let alone hand over Fengtian to a warrior with a Japanese background like Feng Delin, which was the most fundamental reason.
Facts have proved that Yuan Shikai did not look at the wrong person, shortly after Yuan Shikai's death, in 1917 Zhang Xun launched a restoration, Feng Delin haohao went to Beijing to study the restoration, and finally failed to be arrested, almost took his life.
Zhang Zuolin had already seen that the chances of restoration were very small, and it was better to wait and see the situation change.
Although Feng Delin and Zhang Zuolin are both from the green forest, Feng Delin is more like the old-fashioned green forest and cannot cope with the changes of the situation, while Zhang Zuolin is more shrewd and can cope with more complex situations.
