Small Farmers in Big Countries: The "Three Rural Areas" Problem and Strategic Choices in the New Journey of Modernization

By Ye Xingqing

The book mainly discusses the "three rural areas" problem and strategic choices in the new journey of China's modernization, and believes that the strategic adjustment of agriculture needs to meet the requirements of high-level opening up. First of all, from the two dimensions of changes in economic and trade rules and changes in industrial advantages, the far-reaching impact of high-level opening up on China's agriculture is judged, and it is recommended to improve the national food security governance capacity under the conditions of opening up. Secondly, on the basis of authoritative data interpretation, policy text analysis, and summary of local practical experience, the adjustment direction of agricultural policies in the new journey of modernization is proposed: from production increase orientation to competitiveness orientation, from extensive development to sustainable development, from ultra-small-scale operation to moderate operation, from community closure of collective property rights structure to moderate openness, from eliminating absolute poverty to alleviating relative poverty. Finally, review the basic background and demands of the main topics of agricultural reform in the World Trade Organization (WTO), and analyze the impact of the WTO agricultural reform trend on China.

The Practice of the Rule of Law in Democratic Athens

[English] Edward M. Written by M. Harris, translated by Chen Rui, Yin Yajun, and Zhong Wencai

The book focuses on how the Athenians enforced and applied the law when the courts adjudicated disputes. Some recent academic studies have placed great emphasis on the implementation and enforcement of ancient Greek law, however, most of these works have not questioned the following flawed assertions, such as that ancient Athenian law was primarily related to procedure; that the important work of enforcing law was in the hands of ordinary citizens; that the Athenians used the courts not to uphold the law but to settle grievances between individuals; and that the Athenian courts often made decisions on individual cases and paid little attention to the literal meaning of the law. Drawing on modern legal theory, the author examines the nature of the "open structure" of Athenian law and reveals that the Athenians approached law more complexly than many modern scholars had imagined, thus bringing about considerable breakthroughs in the field of study. At the same time, the book explores the flaws of the Athenian legal system and how they led to Athens' defeat in the Peloponnesian War. Edward Harris also refined some of the ideas that scholars had long held by revisiting the existing evidence, and placed the judicial activity in Athens in a broad political and social context.

When The Economy Meets the Law: The Evolution of the Market in Ming and Qing China

Qiu Pengsheng

Some commercial towns in Ming and Qing China had changes in economic organization, economic laws and even cultural ideology, which in turn contributed to the institutional changes at that time. In view of the various economic organizations of Suzhou merchant groups, Suzhou and Songjiang cotton processing industry, Yunnan copper mining and Chongqing shipping industry, as well as Chongqing debt and partnership litigation, and the dissemination of Ming and Qing commercial books, Qiu Pengsheng conducted a specific case analysis to present the close interaction between China's "economic organization, legal system, and cultural concepts" at that time, hoping to further demonstrate how these changes together constituted the "market evolution" of Ming and Qing China. As for how to compare the similarities and differences between the history of the commercial system in Ming and Qing Dynasties and the West, Qiu Pengsheng argues that instead of categorically simplifying the complex development of the modern West, researchers may be able to maintain a more open mind to explore how the West, including China, has conducted its own market evolution path.

"Fu Shen on Zhang Daqian"

Tian Hong and Jiang Chaoxian, eds

"I have neither benefited nor repaid Mr. Daqian, nor have he ever given me paintings, although I would like to go to the door to verify the fake paintings I have collected scattered overseas and his forged works, but I know that he has too many guests and cannot talk freely, so I did not become his guest during his lifetime, let alone tasted the delicacies of Dafengtang," Fu Shen said.

At the same time, Fu Shen admired Zhang Daqian's efforts, talents and achievements in calligraphy and painting, and also liked most of his works, and in many ways believed that Zhang Daqian was a rare person in the history of Chinese painting and one of the most accomplished painters of the twentieth century. Especially as a person who studies the history of ancient paintings and paintings and identifies work, Zhang Daqian is the most ideal object of study, because he is the painter who has the deepest and most extensive understanding of traditional painting among the painters of the past generations and is the best painter, so his works are most related to the history of painting. How to Read Wittgenstein

[English] by Ray Munch, translated by Xu Bin

Wittgenstein is no different from other analytical philosophers in their subjects, all about the nature of logic, the limitations of language, and the meaning of meaning, but he accomplishes this in a unique poetic style that sets his work apart from those of his peers and makes the question of how to read his work particularly important.

According to Ray Munch, the roots of Wittgenstein's thought lie in a determination to uphold the scientist character of our time and to uphold the integrity and autonomy of non-scientific forms of understanding. Wittgenstein sought to show that the understanding we seek in philosophy is similar to the understanding we seek of a person, a piece of music, or even a poem.
