LG Challenge Samsung announced its foray into large-size MicroLED TVs

So far, it's mainly Samsung that's pushing for MicroLED display technology, which many see as the ultimate successor to OLED TVs — as it would happen once the high price drops. But now LG has joined the bandwagon. At a CES press conference in 2022, LG announced that its first microled TVs will ship "later this year."

Just like Samsung, LG says the modular nature of its MicroOLED displays will be able to be combined into any size or shape that an extremely rich set of customers dream of. The company doesn't really delve into the specifics, but today's CES talk showcased a 136-inch 4K HDR MicroLED TV.

Not to be confused with the evolution of Mini LEDs or traditional LCD TVs, MicroLED is a true next-generation leap forward in display technology that retains the best properties of OLED, which, like OLED, is self-illuminating, and MicroLED uses micron-sized LED lights to eliminate backlighting and color filters used in traditional displays. Color reproduction and brightness are also among the best in their class.

In 2022, Samsung added an 89-inch MicroLED TV to its product lineup and said that now the display can be completely bezel-less. But these technology-cutting products are so expensive that it's hard for the average person to seriously consider spending $20,000 on a state-of-the-art 8K TV. For reference, the 110-inch MicroLED TVs sold by Samsung cost well over $150,000. Therefore, the price will need to drop significantly before MicroLED can be accepted by most consumers.
