CINNO Research Industry Information, Apple began to develop OLED panel technology to remove polarizers. After the completion of this technology, the OLED panel will become thinner and is expected to be applied to foldable mobile phones. Samsung Display supplied oled panels without polarizers to the Galaxy Z Fold3, a foldable smartphone for Samsung Electronics, which was launched last year.
According to the Korean media thelec report, the industry reported on May 9 that Apple recently began to develop an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) without polarizer.
Polarizers are components that improve visual effects by emitting only light in a specific direction. However, the polarizer has the disadvantage that after the light passes through the polarizer, the brightness drops by more than half, and the luminous efficiency is reduced. At this point, to increase the brightness, more electricity is consumed. The increase in brightness will lead to a decrease in product life. If other technologies are used to replace the function of the polarizer, the OLED luminous efficiency can be improved and the power consumption can be reduced.
Samsung Display took the lead last year to supply the Foldable Z Fold3, a foldable phone launched by Samsung Electronics, with OLED panels without polarizers. To replace the functionality of polarizers, Samsung Display prints color filters (CF) on thin-film encapsulation materials (TPEs) that protect OLED panels from moisture and oxygen, and adopts a new technology that uses black PDL (Pixel Define Layer) (Pixel Define Layer).
Polarizers are removed and color filters are used to make the color expression clearer. When the light passes through the polarizer, the brightness is reduced by more than 50%, and if the polarizer is removed, the phenomenon of reduced luminous efficiency will disappear. In addition, on the interval between red (R) green (G) blue (B) OLED, a black PDL different from the existing PDL was used. Black PDL is a substance that replaces the raw material of the orange series PDL - photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) with a black series. If the Orange Series substance is used directly, the light will be reflected, which will affect the contrast.
The industry's technology of placing color filters on top of thin-film encapsulation materials is called "COE" (CF On TFE) technology. Samsung Display named the technology the "ECO2" brand. Samsung Display has said that ECO2 technology can improve light transmittance by 33% and reduce power consumption by 25%.
Apple has completed the development of technology to remove polarizers, and if it realizes mass production applications through panel manufacturers, it is expected to improve OLED efficiency. It is reported that Apple plans to apply this polarizer-free technology in its products in 2025.
In addition, removing the polarizer can make the panel thinner and more helpful for application to the foldable panel. Samsung Display's first product to adopt ECO2 technology is the Samsung Electronics Galaxy Z Fold3.
However, some people think that it is difficult to conclude that Apple's technology development is for foldable panel applications. Because Apple has not yet undertaken a foldable project with commercialization in mind. Apple is only working with major panel manufacturers or material manufacturers and other ongoing foldable related projects, but also only to evaluate the level of physical properties (physical properties) and so on.
