
Peony, also known as Luoyang flower, rich flower, is one of the unique flowers in China. The ancients called peony "national color", "national fragrance", "national beauty", "national appearance", etc., which is an incomparable product in ornamental flowers, the so-called "king of flowers".
Successive generations of poets and painters have countless poems and paintings praising peonies, and the significance lies not only in the beautiful appearance of peonies but also in the beautiful emotions of poets and painters. Peony is also one of the favorite flower themes of Chinese painting master Chen Banding, and his works are still cherished by people to this day.
Chen Banding (1876--1970), also known as Chen Nian, painter. A native of Shanyin (present-day Shaoxing), Zhejiang. He is good at flowers, landscapes, calligraphy and seal engraving. He was a director of the China Artists Association, vice president of the Beijing Academy of Painting, and president of the Chinese Painting Research Association.
Representative works include "Lu Tangerine Summer Ripening", "High Branches with Rain Pressing Carving Column", "Only Yellow Flowers Are the Dead", "Chibi Night Tour", "Mo Negative This Life" and so on. In 1956, he held an exhibition of his works in Beijing. There are "Chen Banding Painting Collection", "Chen Banding Flower Painting Notation", "Contemporary Chinese Painting Complete Collection Chen Banding" published.
In the second year of Qing Guangxu (1876), Chen Banding was born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine in Keqiao, Shaoxing, Zhejiang. He lost his mother at the age of 6, his father at the age of 9, and he dropped out of school at an early age and lived a miserable life. In his Autobiography, he said that at the age of 15, he became fascinated by painting and painting, and his hunger was especially ignored.
1. Wu Changshuo personally taught
In 1894, his cousin Wu Yin returned to Shaoxing from Shanghai, and because Yan XinHoujiatuo's "Seven Seals" lacked manpower, he took Chen Banding to the Yan family in Shanghai as a partner.
At that time, the great painter Mr. Wu Changshuo also often went in and out of the Xiaochanglu Pavilion, and when he saw this young man, he was very studious and deeply loved. Not only did he teach it himself, but he also introduced it to his friend Ren Bonian and Pu Zuoying.
Since then, the studious Chen Banding is like a thirsty person Injing, he learned books, prints, and freehand flowers from Wu Changshuo; learned feathers and characters from Ren Bonian; and learned landscapes from Pu Zuoying. In the ocean of Haipai art, the young Chen Banding used his own efforts to absorb the nutrition of various styles and consolidate his artistic foundation.
In 1906 (the thirty-second year of Guangxu), Yan Zijun, the son of Yan Xinhou, invited Chen Banding to his home to paint. At that time, Yan Zijun was a director of the Ningbo Guild Hall, and many of Ren Bonian's paintings in the guild hall needed to be copied, so Chen Banding copied Ren Bonian's paintings in the Yan family.
One day, when he was painting, he was seen by Jincheng, who was very appreciative and planned to invite Chen Banding to come to Beijing with him. After Chen Banding arrived in Beijing, he initially lived in Jincheng's home, but because Prince Su Shanqi wanted to serve the portrait of Wu Liutang, Jincheng recommended Chen Banding to Prince Su's palace, and Prince Su greatly appreciated him.
In 1922, Prince Su died in Lushun, and Chen Banding, in order to repay the kindness of his former acquaintances, held two solo exhibitions in Dalian, selling hundreds of thousands of paintings (old coins), all of which were used for the cost of Prince Su's coffin returning to Beijing. "The Chinese people held a painting exhibition, and Chen Bandingai was the first person to create it."
After Chen Banding came out of Prince Su's mansion, he began to sell paintings with a rather unsatisfactory business, and this situation continued until 1910. That year he invited Wu Changshuo to Beijing.
After Wu Changshuo came to Beijing, he was promoted to chen banding in the Peking art circle at that time for several months, and personally set up a painting for Chen Banding, and Wu Changshuo's vigorous promotion made Chen Banding famous.
Qi Baishi and Chen Banding are in Beijing, and the two also feel sorry for each other's art. Qi Baishi also sent his third son Qi Ziru to banding and became Chen Banding's proud protégé.
2. Interesting things with Zhang Daqian
One day in the 1930s, more than 10 painters in Beiping City held an elegant gathering.
At the banquet, the eldest and most famous painter Chen Banding excitedly announced that he had recently discovered a picture album of the famous painter Shi Tao monk in the early Qing Dynasty, which was exquisite and extraordinary, and rare in the world, so he specially invited the celebrities of the Beiping Art Garden to come to his home at 6 p.m. the next day to appreciate it.
Invited were Zhou Yangyi, president of the Chinese Painting Society, and famous painters Huang Junbi, Ma Jin, Wang Xuetao, Yu Feimin, Xu Yansun, and others.
As we all know, Zhang Daqian is a Shitao fan, how can Zhang Daqian, who was not invited, let go of this opportunity to see ShiTao's true deeds? Therefore, without waiting for Chen Banding's invitation, Zhang Daqian went straight to Chen Mansion at 3 p.m. the next day to ask for a meeting, and unceremoniously asked Chen Banding to show the Tibetan paintings for observation.
At more than 6 o'clock, after the distinguished guests gathered, Chen Banding first made an opening speech at the banquet, claiming that he was fortunate to have obtained a famous deed, did not dare to cherish himself privately, and was willing to enjoy it for friendship.
Zhang Daqian was squeezed into the outer circle of this group of celebrities, and when Chen Banding held out the baby album and just displayed it, Zhang Daqian involuntarily shouted: "It's this booklet!" Don't look, I know! ”
Chen Banding was very angry with the young man's arrogance and impatience, so he learned Zhang Daqian's Sichuan accent and said, "You know, do you know what?" Chen Banding thought, my album has not been fully opened, how do you know?
But at this time, Zhang Daqian did not hurry to tell what was painted on the first page of this album, what was painted on the second page, what model was inscribed, and what seal was used.
While listening to Zhang Daqian's lectures, Chen Banding and the painters looked through the album and checked them, and found that Zhang Daqian did not speak badly at all.
Chen Banding and the painters were very surprised, and Chen even slipped his glasses to the ground when he looked over.
The painter Huang Junbi asked Zhang Daqian in amazement: "How do you remember so clearly?" Zhang Daqian's answer surprised everyone even more. He said triumphantly: "I painted this album, why don't you know?" ”
It turned out that this album was one of Zhang Daqian's previous study works to copy Shi Tao's painting style, which had been circulated and lost for many years, and somehow it was transferred to Chen Banding's hands. Zhang Daqian's refinement of imitation and the high level of painting art have even concealed the eyes of a generation of Chinese painting masters and old predecessors Chen Banding.
