Chen Banding (1876-1970), a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang, was a painter. His parents died when he was young, and his family was poor, but he was diligent and studious, learning poetry and painting from Wu Changshuo, and was good at painting flowers, landscapes and figures.
Yue opera, also known as Shaoxing drama, is the music of Chen Banding's hometown. Since his parents died and his grandmother passed away, Chen Banding was raised by his grandmother. The tragic experience of childhood affected Chen Banding's life, and although he later left Zhejiang, Zhejiang is still a very important place in his life.
Mr. Chen Banding is a typical representative of the Beijing-Tianjin school of painting among the three major schools, and is a leading figure who brought the Hai school of painting into the Beijing painting world.
