【Fine Appreciation】Chen Banding's "Flower Book"

Chen Banding (1876-1970), a native of Shanyin (present-day Shaoxing), Zhejiang. His family was poor, and he studied poetry and painting since childhood. When he was a teenager, his parents died and his life was bumpy. At the age of nineteen, he came to Shanghai with his cousin Wu Shiqian (one of the founders of the Xiling Printing Society) to work as a printing artist at Yan Xiaofang's Xiaochanglu Pavilion. At the age of 20, he went to Shanghai, met Ren Bonian and Wu Changshuo, and later worshiped Wu Changshuo as a teacher. After the age of 40, he went to Beijing, first worked in the Beijing Library, and later taught at the Peking Art College. He was a director of the China Artists Association, vice president of the Beijing Academy of Painting, and president of the Chinese Painting Research Association.

Chen Banding is good at flowers, landscapes, characters, and animals, and is best known for his freehand flowers. In addition to Ren Yi and Wu Changshuo, he also studied with Zhao Zhiqian, Xu Wei, and Chen Chun, and was unique in absorbing the painting methods of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The pen and ink are smooth and simple, the colors are bright and calm, the image is concise and generalized, and the interaction of poetry, calligraphy and painting is emphasized. Good at copying.
