Chen Geng was born on February 27, 1903, in Xiangxiang City, Hunan Province, into a family of generals. From 1909 to 1911, he attended the village's private school, and in 1912 he entered the Tan Jia Ancestral Hall Private School. In 1915, he studied at Li Dongshan Senior Primary School in Xiangxiang County for one year. In 1916, he enlisted in the army.
Chen Geng was a legendary figure with great influence in the Kuomintang camp. He graduated from the first phase of the Whampoa Military Academy before he was 20 years old. When Xu Ten Marshals General Xu had not yet done anything, Chen Geng had already been ranked as the "Huangpu Three Masters." In October 1937, as soon as the 386th Brigade entered the battlefield, it was famous for its three battles and three victories.
