Cultural origins

Longzhou is the birthplace of Jingbian shadow puppetry. Legend has it that the Jingbian shadow puppet came from the Ming court. After the fall of Wei Zhongxian, a powerful eunuch of the Ming Dynasty, a large number of entertainers and musicians who had served him were driven out of the court and exiled to the streets, and the Yulin Chief Soldier and Horse Lord took in one of the artists and brought them back to Yulin. In the early years of the Qianlong Dynasty, Longzhou produced a Daotai surnamed Lu who was particularly fond of shadow puppets, so he brought back a group of shadow puppet artists from Yulin to take root in Longzhou, and it has a history of more than three hundred years since the early Qianlong period. For hundreds of years, it has been active in the large and small temple fair stages in the county and surrounding counties and towns, and its rise and fall have alternated to this day.

In the 1940s, the poet Li Ji finished teaching in Jingbian County. Longzhou Huang Sanshan led his apprentice Sun Guangzhao and others to sing for three days at the Zhenjing Laoye Temple, and Li Ji did not miss the scene. Also watching were Jingbian celebrities Du Zhidong (president) and Yao Yizhuang (modern playwright and later chairman of the Ningxia Federation of Literature and Literature). After reading it, Li Ji praised it and said: "The three sides are really a treasure land, I originally knew that the desolate three sides gave birth to the crown of Chinese famous songs, Xintianyou, and I didn't expect that there were living fossils of Chinese drama." "Puppets are the ancestors of Chinese theater, and shadow puppets are the father of world cinema. Mr. Du Zhidong teased Sun Guangzhao and said, "Sun Mason (the Sun family has been a stonemason for generations) take a good look at this gemstone. At that time, the artists could not understand What Mr. Li Ji said, and Mr. Yao Yizhuang gave a detailed explanation to the crowd. Mr. Sun Guangzhao remembers it all his life and often talks about this good story with people when he is alive.

In the 1960s, the development of Jingbian shadow puppetry reached its peak, and there were six shadow puppet theater classes in the county - Wujia in Longzhou Township and Wang Da in Sanchaqu Township. The Cultural Revolution was a catastrophe, and a large number of precious shadow puppets were "broken" by the Red Guards. In the 1980s, Longzhou shadow puppet artists Yang Shouren, Zhang Zhanyuan and Ma Ningkang set up shadow puppet theater classes, which were sold in the late 1980s. At present, only Wei Junbin's shadow puppet class in Longzhou is active.

The tone used in the Jingbian shadow puppet is unique, distinctive, and self-contained. There are both euphemistic and unique Jiangnan silk bamboo as the backbone, and there is also a bright and free rhythm of northern Shaanxi style as the background rhyme. In addition, percussion calls small drama big hits, which requires rigor. The repertoire is colorful and the shadow puppets are realistic. The times are developing, science is progressing, and the impact of film and television on shadow puppetry is also natural.
