In 1928, Liu Wendian served as the president of Anhui University, Chiang Kai-shek also just came to power, he repeatedly said that he wanted to visit Anhui University, but Liu Wendian did not welcome, and finally in Chiang Kai-shek's inspection, Anhui University did not show the warm scene that the leader should have temporarily, Chiang Kai-shek was very dissatisfied, Liu Wendian's explanation for this was: "The university is not a yamen, there is no need to flatter the magnates."

When Anhui University was in a state of flux, Chiang Kai-shek ordered Liu Wendian to report to him, and this summons notice used words such as "order, duty" and "connivance with students to make trouble." Liu Wendian was very dissatisfied with this, and said: "I Liu Shuya is not a pawn of a peddler, even if it is a high-ranking official, I should not call me and wave away." The incident shook the academic community, and students in Anqing held demonstrations demanding "protection of human rights" and "release of Liu Wendian." Later, through the help of Kuomintang elder Cai Yuanpei and others, it was only when the early league member and Sun Yat-sen's old secretary "left Anhui on the same day" that Liu Wendian was detained for seven days and released.
